NFL Free Agency 2012: Rocky McIntosh Visits New York Jets

Free agent linebacker Rocky McIntosh has visited the New York Jets on Thursday according to a post by Aaron Wilson.

McIntosh was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He's also visited the Miami Dolphins and the Minnesota Vikings.

Even though McIntosh was the starter last season, he lost his job to rookie Perry Riley towards the end of the 2011 season. Last year he recorded 35 solo tackles, one sack, and one interception. Two seasons ago, he recorded 73 solo tackles, so whoever signs him will get a productive tackler.

After exploring interest from several teams, Hightower announced his decision via his Twitter feed:

John Beck Signs With Houston Texans, According To Report

The Washington Redskins released quarterback John Beck after the 2012 NFL Draft, that saw the Redskins draft not one but two quarterbacks. It didn't take long for the former Redskins quarterback to get another shot with another NFL team. Beck has signed a deal with the Houston Texans, according to a report.

McClain notes that Beck is familiar with the Texans offensive system, having played for Mike Shanahan. Kubiak's offensive system is virtually identical to what Shanahan runs, as both worked together with Denver Broncos. The Texans had wanted a veteran quarterback after dealing with injuries last season.

Leonard Hankerson Injury: Receiver On Track To Return In Time For Camp

Expectations are high for Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. The reality is that RG3 cannot live up to the hype on his own. He does need a little help from the players around him, particularly the wide receivers. Second-year receiver Leonard Hankerson expects to be fully recovered from hip surgery in time to help out the young quarterback, according to the Washington Post.

Hankerson injured during an eight-catch, 106-yard breakout game against the Dolphins in Week 10. He had surgery in February to repair a torn labrum in his right hip.

"I'm feeling good, getting better every day. Not quite there yet, but hopefully I will be in a couple of weeks."

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan expects Hankerson to see plenty of playing time along with free agent additions Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan.

Redskins Free Agency: Washington Signs Linebacker Jonathan Goff

According to a post on ESPN.com, the Washington Redskins have added to their linebacking corps by signing former New York Giants linebacker Jonathan Goff. The Redskins now have some surprising depth of that position.

Goff was supposed to be the starting linebacker last season for the Giants before tearing his ACL. This addition, along with Bryan Kehl as well as fourth-round pick Keenan Robinson should sure up the inside linebacker position with London Fletcher and Perry Riley currently prospected to be the top starters at that position and Lorenzo Alexander right behind them. With Fletcher's age and Riley's inexperience, if Goff is healthy he could find himself getting a lot of playing time for the Redskins.

Redskins Free Agency: Kicker Neil Rackers Says He Has Signed With Washington

Free agent kicker Neil Rackers told a Houston television station he signed a one-year contract with Washington Redskins, according to a report in The Washington Post. The team has not yet confirmed the deal, but Rackers did meet with the club on Monday said he was "headed to Washington" with a deal. Via Mark Maske:

"We're going to see what happens, but it seems like the best opportunity for me and my family at this point," Rackers told the TV station. "There's more upside, more opportunity for advancement in Washington."

Rackers was apparently miffed that he did not get a multi-year offer from the Texans, as he said was promised. He's a veteran kicker who's had success in Arizona and Houston. If the deal is official, Rackers would compete with Graham Gano for the starting job.

In the four years that Wilson was with the Redskins, he has played in every game recording 65 tackles overall with six sacks. Wilson also forced a pair of fumbles in 2010. NFL Free Agency 2012: Redskins Bring K Neil Rackers In For Visit

The Washington Redskins found time in their draft preparation to host free agent kicker Neil Rackers recently. According to Aaron Wilson of Fox and the National Football Post, Rackers was the most recent free agent the Redskins hosted after loading up early in the offseason.

Rackers, 35, put 32 of his 38 field goal attempts through the uprights for the Houston Texans this season. He was four-for-five on attempts of 50 yards or more. Both sides were talking about a new contract, but nothing has materialized. Washington could upgrade their kicking position over Graham Gano, who made just 75 percent of his field goal attempts last season.

NFL Increases Roster Size To 90 Players

The NFL approved a plan on Monday that will increase offseason roster sizes for teams from 80 to 90 players. That change goes into effect at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April, 24.

The new roster limits will include active, inactive, exempt players, reserve lists, unsigned draft choices and franchise free agent players. The beside the numerical increase in manpower, the most notable aspect of the change is the inclusion of unsigned players, including draft picks that have not signed their contracts.

Teams are allowed to keep their rosters at 90 players through the third week of the preseason. After that third game, teams must cut the roster down to 75 players. A final round of cuts, from 75 to the final 53-man rosters, happens the week before the regular season starts.

The Washington Redskins continue to add depth to their linebacking corps by signing former New York Giants and St. Louis Rams linebacker Bryan Kehl on Monday, according to a tweet by Rich Campbell, Redskins beat reporter for The Washington Times.

Kehl has played five years in the NFL with both St. Louis and New York. In that time he has recorded over 100 tackles, playing in at least 14 games a season in four of the last five years. Signing Kehl adds depth to a position that can be key in the 3-4 defense that they run.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Re-Signing Tim Hightower Still Possibility For Redskins

Tim Hightower, who began last season as the Washington Redskins starting running back before an ACL tear ended his campaign, remains a free agent this offseason and could possibly return to the team. Via Mike Jones of the Washington Post's Insider:

Free agent running back Tim Hightower visited the New England Patriots Saturday, but the Washington Redskins still remain in play to re-sign the four-year veteran, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Before being lost for the season in a game against the Carolina Panthers, Hightower had gained 321 yards on 84 carries, scoring a touchdown on the ground and scoring once through the air. Hightower showed an excellent ability to block in the backfield and is not even 26 years old yet, so if fully recovered he would be a worthy low-risk signing by Washington.

2012 NFL Free Agency: London Fletcher Signs Five Year Contract That Can Void To Two

The Washington Redskins checked one of the bigger items off their offseason wish list over the weekend when they re-signed inside linebacker and defensive leader London Fletcher to a contract extension. Until now we only had the word of London to go on, but now we have some more details about what the exact specifications of the contract are.

Now keep in mind that London Fletcher will be 37 in a couple of weeks, so the chances of him making it to year five of that contract are somewhere between slim and none. So I would expect the deal to be more in the two-year variety. But then again, who would count London Fletcher out of anything at this point in his career?

Washington and the Atlanta Falcons are the two teams Williams is reportedly choosing from. Here is the original tweet from Barrows:

The Washington Redskins announced on Monday that the team has signed offensive tackle James Lee. Lee was most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he started 10 games in the last two seasons.

A 6'4" 3-5 lbs lineman, the Cleveland Browns signed Lee as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He was waived prior to the start of the 2008 season, and Tampa Bay scooped him up off waivers. He spent each of the last four seasons with the Buccaneers.

Lee played his college ball at South Carolina State, starting 31 of 33 games in his career there. He was a third team All-American in his senior season.

Golston played in nine games for the Redskins last season and managed 1.5 sacks along with a forced fumble. Golston has played for the Redskins every year since being drafted in the sixth round in 2006.

For his career he has recorded seven sacks, two forced fumbles and has been credited with 168 total tackles. Golston is a special teams specialist so re-signing him can only help the kick off and punt coverage teams going forward.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Washington Redskins Interested In Safety Madieu Williams, According To Reports

Mike Jones of The Washington Post is reporting that the Redskins are showing interest in safety Madieu Williams.

According to Jones, Williams visited the Redskins on Friday and was offered a contract to come play in Washington. If the name sounds familiar, Williams played for the Maryland Terrapins and has donated $2 million to the university in 2009 to begin the Madieu Williams Center for Global Health Initiatives. He was awarded the 2011 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The 2011 season was a bit of a disappointment for Williams who had just nine tackles and no interceptions in 15 games with the San Francisco 49ers. Williams was a second-round pick in the 2004 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Rocky McIntosh Visits With Miami Dolphins

The Washington Redskins need some help at inside linebacker, and they will likely have to address that need in the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft. But there was a player already on the roster last year who has experience at the position but seems to be moving elsewhere. According to the Washington Post Rocky McIntosh is visiting with the Miami Dolphins, and appears to be on his way out of Washington.

McIntosh, whom the Redskins drafted out of the University of Miami in 2006 as an outside linebacker, recorded a career-high 110 tackles for Washington in 2010 — his first season at inside linebacker. He re-signed to a one-year deal last July. But, he fell out of favor with the coaching staff and lost his job as a starter after eight games.

It has long been known that McIntosh was probably going to be on his way out, especially considering the strong play of youngster Perry Riley. McIntosh could add some depth at the position, but it appears that the coaching staff is comfortable letting him go. If London Fletcher signs elsewhere as well the position will be incredibly weak for the Redskins.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Redskins Hope To Re-Sign Tim Hightower

The Redskins got some capable performances from Roy Helu and Evan Royster last year as fill-ins for some of the Redskins veteran running backs. One of those backs was Tim Hightower who came to the team just last year and missed most of the year with a knee injury. He's a free agent, and according to Rich Campbell of the Washington Times, Mike Shanahan and the Redskins want to bring Hightower back into the fold.

"We’re trying to re-sign Hightower," Shanahan said. "You’re just hoping that he comes back full speed from his knee with the ACL. But, yeah, he’s a potential starter on our football team. . . It looks like he’ll be back full speed ready to go."

Shanahan also said that the Redskins plan to add some more running backs before training camp and want to have about five or six on the roster before the Summer comes to a close. Helu, Royster and Tristan Davis are the favorites to be a part of that stable as of right now.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Redskins Still in Negotiations With London Fletcher

Mike Shanahan met with the assembled media for the first time in a few months on Wednesday, and one of the topics of conversation was London Fletcher, the leader of the Washington defense for the past few years who is still a free agent. According to Rich Campbell of the Washington Times, Shanahan couldn't go into detail about his intentions with Fletcher, but he was clear that the Redskins want him back.

"I can’t get into detail; all I can say is we want him," Shanahan said. "There’s conversations ongoing between agents. That’s part of the process. We’ll let that take its course, but I’m hoping he’s part of our organization, and I expect him to be."

There is a lot of speculation that the Redskins are waiting on Fletcher until they can get their salary cap issue with the NFL resolved, and they know exactly how much space they will have moving forward.

2012 Redskins Offseason: Team Likely To Hold Training Camp At Facility In Ashburn

The Washington Redskins had been toying with the idea of moving their Training Camp to a different location for the upcoming season and beyond, but according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, it seems like training camp will be right back at the team facility in Ashburn this offseason. Mike Shanahan spoke with the media on Wednesday, and that issue came up.

"I think it will be right there in Ashburn," Shanahan said Wednesday.

But he didn't say that the training camp was going to be Ashburn for the near future, just that they had yet to find a suitable place to move it to.

"We haven’t been able to find that facility yet," Shanahan said.

That still keeps the option open that the team could move their training camp away from the team facility at some point in the next few years.

Lorenzo Alexander Says Cap Penalty Hurting Efforts To Re-Sign London Fletcher

Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander recently spoke with Alex Marvez of Fox Sports. In that conversation, Alexander claimed that the NFL's salary cap penalty has hindered efforts by the Redskins to re-sign fellow linebacker London Fletcher.

The end result in this could be that both players may be off the team in 2013. Both Alexander and Fletcher are highly regarded players on the Redskins. Alexander is the special teams captain and Fletcher has been a leader on the Redskins defense since he was signed in 2007.

One of the reasons why this is such a problem for the Redskins is because Fletcher will probably demand much of his money up front for his deal. The Redskins may have to take a hit on cap space in the future to keep both players on the team.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback Josh Johnson will visit the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, according to a report from the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Via @JasonLaCanfora:

Johnson backed up Josh Freeman for the past two seasons in Tampa, and with Rex Grossman back in the fold and Robert Griffin III likely on the way, the interest in Johnson would almost certainly be for a backup and utility role. He completed 19 of 36 passes for one touchdown and two interceptions last season, spelling Freeman who dealt with a shoulder injury.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Adam Carriker And Kory Lichtensteiger Re-Sign

The Washington Redskins announced Tuesday afternoon that they have re-signed both defensive end Adam Carriker and guard Kory Lichtensteiger.

Carriker, who was an unrestricted free agent, will be returning for his third season with the Redskins and sixth in the NFL. He has registered 188 tackles, nine sacks, and three forced fumbles in 63 career games (57 starts). Carriker saw plenty of improvement in 2011, as he was able to have 5.5 sacks last season alone.

Lichtensteiger has appeared in 37 NFL games (19 starts), and played in the first five games of the 2011 season at left guard before a knee injury landed him on the injure reserved.

NFL Free Agency: Goodbye, Gucci: An Appreciation For LaRon Landry's Monkey

It's Animals Day here at SB Nation D.C., obviously, and since we've already given you an update on the progress of Jack the Bulldog, we might as well double down by paying tribute to the DMV's favorite simian, Gucci, LaRon Landry's white-faced capuchin monkey.

Landry acquired Gucci during the 2009 NFL offseason, and the monkey made its first appearance at Redskins Park shortly after. This was how Landry explained his new pet to Matt Terl, then the Official Blogger of the Washington Redskins.

"Just a thought over the offseason ... I didn’t want nothin’ too big. He’ll get up to fifteen pounds, live 35 to 50 years. When I die, he can die with me."

As Robin Williams said in The Birdcage, "How Egyptian."

NFL Free Agency 2012: LaRon Landry Agrees To One-Year Deal With New York Jets, According To Report

The transaction that was only a matter of time has now come to pass. According to Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network, former Redskins safety LaRon Landry is now a member of the New York Jets.

ESPN's Adam Schefter came through a few minutes later with the numbers.

Landry had played all five years of his NFL career with the Redskins, who drafted him with the 6th overall pick back in 2007. In recent years, he had become more renowned for his impressive physique and myriad injuries than for his play on the field. The Redskins essentially stamped his ticket out of town by placing the franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis instead of Landry earlier this month.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Donte Stallworth Signs One-Year Deal With New England Patriots, According To Report

Take another free agent wide receiver off the board. This time, the Redskins are losing a pass-catcher rather than gaining a pass-catcher, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Stallworth played in 11 games for the Redskins in 2011, catching 22 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He would have surely seen the writing on the wall last week after the Redskins brought in Pierre Garcon and Joshua Morgan at the start of free agency.

One of the defenders of the deal was Washington Post columnist and 106.7 The Fan midday host Mike Wise, who was talking up Grossman's potential role as a backup to (likely) Robert Griffin III under pressure from co-host Holden Kushner when the very subject of their discussion called in.

We only were able to catch the back half of this interview, but we did find it amusing that the very first thing we heard Grossman say was " "A lot of those games we lost could have gone either way."

As Sterling Mallory Archer would say, God, that is just classic Rex.

NFL Free Agency: Rex Grossman Confirms Return To Redskins

The Redskins have not officially announced the signing of quarterback Rex Grossman to a one-year deal, but the quarterback himself confirmed that he would be back with the team in 2012.

Speaking to Mike Jones of The Washington Post, Grossman disclosed that he had another team interested in him (ah, the effect of expansion on the NFL's quarterback market), but declined to say which. As in most Grossman interviews, the quarterback comes off as both level-headed and pie-in-the-sky. A good example of the former is here, when Grossman discusses the franchise's future plans.

"[The Redskins are] definitely taking a quarterback with the second pick of the draft," Grossman said. "It’ll probably be RGIII, unless for some unexpected reason the Colts take him. But whether it’s RGIII or Luck, either way, I know that quarterback is going to be the franchise quarterback at some point. Like I said, I just want to be a part of this team. Whether it’s helping that guy get ready to play, or whether it’s playing until he is ready to take over, I just want to help out in whatever way it is."

And an example of the latter is here, when Grossman discusses on improving from his 20 interceptions and five fumbles lost in 2011.

"I need to and can get better with consistency," Grossman said. "I can go out and play lights-out one week, and the next week, not do so well. The number-one thing is turnovers. I’ve got to do better with decision-making, and things like that, and I think I can."

Rex Grossman, Washington Redskins Agree To 1-Year Deal, According To Report

The Washington Redskins have already completed a trade up with the St. Louis Rams to presumably draft quarterback Robert Griffin III in this April's NFL Draft. The Redskins however still need to address the back up quarterback position and have done so according to a report by Pro Football Talk.

Grossman started much of the season for the Redskins in 2011, starting 13 games. Grossman was up and down much of the season, as he's known to be, and finished up with 3,151 passing yards and throwing 16 touchdowns with 20 interceptions. Grossman should provide a good challenge for Robert Griffin III in training camp, assuming he's the Redskins pick in April.

Washington Redskins Could Sue NFL Over Salary Cap Ruling

The Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys were both docked chunks of their salary cap space by the NFL for "cheating the system" during the NFL's uncapped season in 2010 by salary dumping contracts in the uncapped year. It's looking more and more likely however that the Redskins and Cowboys, who both possess some of the most powerful owners in the NFL, will not take the punishment laying down. According to a report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the two teams may potentially go "nuclear" over the issue.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the Redskins and Cowboys could be going "nuclear" with the NFL as soon as Monday.

More specifically, the two teams are contemplating suing anyone and everyone connected to the sudden removal of $46 million in total cap space over the next two years, based on the contention that their treatment of the term "uncapped year" too literally somehow created a competitive disadvantage. Even though no rules or policies were violated.

Part of the problem with the two teams being punished, is they did not actually break a rule. The only rule that was broken was a sort of "back room" agreement between the 32 NFL clubs which is technically collusion. Not only was there not an official rule being broken, but plenty of other teams committed the same offense without punishment.

Former Redskins Running Back Tim Hightower Rescued From Arizona Mountain

Sammy_c_headshot_medium

It wouldn't be the Redskins if something bizarre didn't happen during free agency. In this case, the bizarre thing was also a very scary thing.

From My Fox Phoenix:

A couple who went for an evening hike on Camelback Mountain Thursday ended up needing some help, and the man who needed help is reportedly a former Cardinals player.

Witnesses called the FOX 10 newsroom to report that the man needing aid was Tim Hightower ...

[Hightower and wife Krista] ended up hiking off-trail and getting lost, and then it became too dark for them to make it down.

The pair wasn't hurt, but the challenge for crews was climbing up there in the dark and bringing them down safely.

Redskins Free Agency: Fred Davis Signs Franchise Tender

The Washington Redskins announced Friday that tight end Fred Davis has signed his franchise tender for the 2012 season.

The 26-year-old is coming of a career season in 2011 where he set single season highs in receptions (59) and receiving yards (796). His 796 receiving yards last season ranks for the fourth-most in a season by a tight end in Redskins history. In his four-year career, he has recorded 131 receptions for 1,648 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Southern California product was taken by the Redskins in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Washington Redskins Sign DB Cedric Griffin To A One-Year Deal, According To Report

The Washington Redskins continue signing players to help their secondary by signing former Minnesota Vikings defensive back Cedric Griffin, according to a post by Evan Silva on Pro Football Talk.

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports that the Washington Redskins have agreed to terms with defensive back Cedric Griffin on a one-year contract with a max value of $2.5 million.

The Redskins have been needing some secondary help this offseason. By the look of this contract, its not a severe amount of money that they are parting with to sign Griffin so a low risk signing like this could really help the Redskins in the long term.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Cedric Griffin To Visit With Redskins Friday, According To Report

The Redskins remain interested in bolstering their secondary as they are welcoming in cornerback Cedric Griffin to visit with the Redskins on Friday according to league sources.

While there is nothing official in the works for Griffin, the emphasis on having a better pass defense is great to see. The Redskins had one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL a year ago and bolstering their secondary with some veterans is a decent start for revamping that group of players.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Former Redskin LaRon Landry Will Visit Jets

Over the first few days of free agency laRon Landry remained relatively quiet, but now he is making the rounds, and seems to be very popular in the AFC East. After a visit with the New England Patriots this week, Landry will reportedly head to New York to meet with the Jets over the weekend.

The Jets need safeties almost as much as the Redskins do, and you have to imagine that Rex Ryan would be able to think up some pretty fun and interesting ways to use Landry's unique talents. All of this is of course assuming that he gets out of New England without signing a contract.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Redskins Lose Eddie Royal; Receiver Signs With San Diego Chargers, According To Report (UPDATED)

One of the Redskins' main free agency targets officially got away from them Thursday night, as Eddie Royal signed with the San Diego Chargers.

We'll give the hat tip to ESPN's Adam Schefter on this one.

You will recall that one report late Tuesday night had Royal signing a two-year deal with the Redskins. Talks progressed to the point that Royal was reportedly seen dining at Morton's with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, general manager Bruce Allen, and head coach Mike Shanahan. But all the fine steak in the world wouldn't have made much of a difference if the Chargers did indeed offer him one more year than the Redskins.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Brandon Meriweather Signs With Washington Redskins, According To Report

The Washington Redskins continue their free agent frenzy by signing safety Brandon Meriweather to a 2 year, $6 million deal, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Secondary was a position that the Redskins needed to address in the off season and this signing does not appear to be too bad financially. Meriweather has had problems with undisciplined play in the secondary before while in Chicago and in New England, but maybe some time with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett can help him learn the discipline he needs.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Redskins Safety LaRon Landry Will Visit With Patriots

The market for impact defensive players is starting to thin out a little bit, which means that LaRon Landry should start getting his fair share of attention from teams that need help at safety. According to SB Nation Boston, Landry will visit with the Patriots this weekend.

The Patriots have kept a low profile so far during this free agency period, but they'll have at least one visitor this weekend, as former Redskins safety Laron Landry is set to visit the team this weekend, according to a report.

The Patriots have some issues with their defensive secondary, but their issue is with coverage more so than run support. So I'm not exactly sure how Landry fits in there given his history of getting beat over the top. But the Patriots are great at using talent to their advantage, and they could help Landry get his career back on track.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Redskins Showing Interest In Mike Brisiel, According To Report

The Washington Redskins have been buy upgrading their skill position players so far in free agency, but a lot of fans have been wondering where the big guys up front are? As a result, the Redskins have turned their attention to the next tier of free agents, and potential Texans guard Mike Brisiel.

Brisiel is part of a mass exodus of players leaving the Texans offensive line this offseason, and he could be a solid depth signing for the Redskins.

Washington Redskins Free Agency: Eddie Royal To Visit San Diego Chargers

The Washington Redskins have already signed wide receivers Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, but they're still trying to add to their receiving group in free agency. NFL Free Agency: Redskins Pursuing OL Ben Grubbs, According To Report

The Redskins aren't looking very far afield in pursuit of their latest free agency target. According to Mike Jones of The Washington Post, the Redskins are pursuing left guard Ben Grubbs of the Baltimore Ravens.

Per Jones:

A five-year veteran with the Baltimore Ravens, the 6-foot-3, 311-pound Auburn product started 10 games last season and has started 70 of 74 games for the Ravens during his career.

Grubbs played for current Redskins offensive line coach Chris Foerster, who held the same position in Baltimore during Grubbs’ rookie year.

The Redskins offensive line suffered from lack of depth in 2011. In particular, once guard Kory Lichtensteiger went down with a knee injury, it turned into a game of musical chairs. A durable depth signing like Grubbs would definitely go a long way toward fixing that problem.

NFL Free Agency: Aaron Ross Set To Visit Redskins Friday

Having apparently settled their wide receiver problem to their satisfaction, the Redskins have turned their attention to the back end of their defense.

Per John Keim of the Washington Examiner

The Redskins aren't the only competitor for Ross' services, as he was scheduled to visit the Bengals earlier this week.

Ross's great advantage is durability. He played 31combined regular season games in 2010 and 2011. He also recorded career-highs in interceptions and tackles (4 and 47, respectively) while gaining his second Super Bowl ring with the Giants.

New Redskins Wide Receiver To Be Known As Joshua Morgan

2012 NFL Free Agency: Former Bear Safety Brandon Meriweather Will Visit With Redskins

The Washington Redskins spent the majority of the first day of Free Agency adding to their wide receiver corps, but on Wednesday, they will look to add a player that could help on the other side of the ball. Former Patriot and Bear safety Brandon Meriweather will reportedly be in Washington on Wednesday meeting with the club.

Safety is suddenly one of the biggest needs on the roster after both starting safeties hit the open market this offseason. Meriweather was a very effective player for the Patriots but was released and joined the Bears, where he had a tough time seeing the field.

NFL Free Agency: Contract Details Emerge For Adam Carriker, Pierre Garcon, And Josh Morgan

So, now that we've had to hold up the welcome party for Eddie Royal just a little bit, it appears that the Redskins made three major signings on the first day of free agency. Wide receivers Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan will be new faces at Redskins Park when the 'Skins report for mini-camp, while Adam Carriker will be making a triumphant return to Ashburn after re-signing with the team.

Some details have come out about each of these contracts that we feel are worth passing on, especially in light of the recent cap penalty handed down by the NFL.

First, Carriker's deal, per Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network.

And here's Garcon's contract details from Rich Campbell of the Washington Times.

And here's Morgan's per LaCanfora again.

So there you are. If you were wondering how the Redskins could manage to splash the cash around this time of all times, look no further than the Carriker and Morgan deals, which have minimal impact on the team's cap number this year. Chalk another one up for the cap management office.

NFL Free Agency: Eddie Royal Not A Done Deal After All (UPDATED)

It seems that the Redskins signing of free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal is not a done deal as of yet. Adam Caplan of Sirius/XM has been tweeting insistently throughout the day that Royal had not yet put pen to paper with the Redskins, and here's his latest update.

For what it's worth, Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan and Mike Jones of the Washington Post have both pulled back on their initial reports that Royal had signed. It's not the fault of either Paulsen and Jones, who are both good reporters. It's just one of those things that happens, and is particularly prone to happen on a crazy day like Tuesday was.

NFL Free Agency 2012: LaRon Landry To Meet With Four Teams

In a tweet from Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole, free-agent LaRon Landry is to make visits with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

The safety has cut ties with the Redskins, the team he has been a member of since he was taken by Washington with the sixth overall selection in the 2007 NFL Draft. Landry has compiled 383 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 4 interceptions to this point in his career.

Cole did not mention specifics as to when Landry would be visiting these teams, however it is safe to assume that these four teams are the front-runners for signing him.

NFL Free Agency: Redskins Agree To Terms With Eddie Royal, According To Report

The Redskins' signing of free agent wide receiver Eddie Royal was first reported earlier Tuesday afternoon by Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan, but it took nearly an hour for anyone to actually nail down the terms of the deal. Finally, Mike Jones of the Washington Post came through.

Royal signed for $12 million over two years, the person said.

The former Virginia Tech standout was drafted 42nd overall by Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan in 2008 when Shanahan was the head coach in Denver. That season, Royal had a career-high 91 catches for 980 yards and five touchdowns.

Royal also is a talented punt returner who averaged 16.2 yards per runback last season.

By this point, it should be pretty clear what Washington's plan is. The Redskins obviously weren't happy with the receiving corps in 2011. It's hard to blame them considering the injury to Leonard Hankerson, the continued aging of Santana Moss, and the slumping of Anthony Armstrong and Brandon Banks. Banks should be particularly worried by this signing since, as Jones points out, Royal is an experienced punt returner.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Redskins Agree To Terms With Wide Receiver Josh Morgan, According To Report

The news continues to come fast and furious as the Washington Redskins have apparently wrapped up the signing of a second wide receiver.

From Pro Football Talk:

That strikes us as a pretty reasonable deal for a young receiver. It's certainly lighter on the Redskins' salary cap than the Pierre Garcon deal.

I will also be interesting to see how many snaps Morgan plays in training camp -- as well as who he replaces, as it certainly seems that the Redskins are going all-out to reshape their receiving corps.

Update: Michael Lombardi and Rich Campbell have both confirmed the deal, so we can call this done.

Redskins Pursuing Wide Receiver Eddie Royal And Cornerback Eric Wright; According To Report

So, let's review the tally on this first day of NFL free agency. So far, we have one wide receiver signed by the Redskins (Pierre Garcon), and another one being pursued by the Redskins (Josh Morgan).

Now, it seems you can add another wide receiver and a cornerback to the Redskins' wish list.

First, this report from Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network

Royal, like Josh Morgan, is a local guy (from Alexandria, went to Virginia Tech) who can return punts. Oh, and for the record, he only turns 26 in May.

And then there's this from Adam Schefter.

Pierre Garcon Contract With Redskins Is For 5 Years, $42.5 Million, According To Report

Pierre Garcon's contract details for his new deal with the Washington Redskins have come out, and the former Indianapolis Colts receiver is going to make a good amount of money. Garcon's contract is for five years and about $42.5 million, with $21.5 million guaranteed, according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

That would make Garcon a higher-paid player than several other top receivers on the market, including Marques Colston of the New Orleans Saints and Stevie Johnson of the Buffalo Bills. Colston received five years and $40 million to stay with the Saints with just under half of that guaranteed, while Johnson received a five-year, $36.25 million deal with $19.5 million guaranteed. It remains unclear how the contract is structured year-to-year or whether the team's salary-cap penalty imposed by the NFL had any effect on the deal.

Garcon caught a career-high 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns for the Colts in his fourth season in the league last year.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Adam Carriker Re-Signs With Redskins

The Washington Redskins have resigned defensive lineman Adam Carriker to a four-year, $20 million deal with $7 million guarenteed.

Carriker was very excited to re-sign the team as he announced via Twitter:

I'm back! #resign94complete

The nose tackle had 34 total tackles in 2011 with an impressive 5.5 sacks. He has played the past two seasons with the Redskins after beginning his career in 2007 with the Rams where he was the Rams' Rookie of the Year. In 2006 he was the Big XII Defensive Lineman of the year, leading to his selection at 13th overall in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Morgan, who turns 27 in June, is a D.C. guy. He went to Woodson High School and Virginia Tech. He only started five games and caught 15 balls for 220 yards in 2011. However, Morgan also caught 44 balls for 698 yards in 2010.

NFL Free Agency: Pierre Garcon Signs With Washington Redskins, He Announces

Pierre Garcon, a wide receiver that played for the Indianapolis Colts last season, has signed with the Washington Redskins, he announced on his Facebook page. The former Colts receiver wrote that he's "very excited" for the opportunity to play in the nation's capital.

I wanted you all to hear it from me 1st before u saw it on the news... I will be signing with the Washington Redskins and I'm very excited about the opportunity in front of me.

I want to thank all Colts fans from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you've shown me the past 4 years and I hope that at some level u will still follow my career, as I will continue to share my life with you on here

Terms of Garcon's contract remain unclear, but the Redskins have evidently chosen him over Marques Colston, who re-signed with the New Orleans Saints, and Vincent Jackson, who is rumored to be heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Garcon caught a career-high 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns in his fourth season last year, doing all that without Peyton Manning.

NFL Free Agency: Pierre Garcon Meeting With Redskins, According To Reports

Jason Cole of Yahoo.com reported on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that ex-Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Pierre Garcon is meeting with the Washington Redskins to talk about a possible contract to bring the wide out to Washington.

Signing him will take a rather large commitment from the Redskins, as Garcon turned down a five-year $35 million deal offered by the Colts back in February.

Garcon brought had 70 receptions for 947 yards in 2011, including six receiving touchdowns. He has impressive speed and was a popular deep target for Peyton Manning back in 2009 and 2010.

Garcon has also reportedly being pursued by the St. Louis Rams as NFL free agency began Tuesday. The Redskins have been rumored to be looking for a top-notch wide receiver in free agency, most notably former San Diego Chargers wide out Vincent Jackson.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Wide Receiver Marques Colston Agrees To Extension With New Orleans, According To Report

With free agency beginning to open, a name that the Redskins thought they could pursue if Vincent Jackson or Pierre Garcon were taken is now off the market. The New Orleans Saints agreed to an extension with wide receiver Marques Colston according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

The loss of Colston as a possible target by the Redskins is not crippling, but it does remove a possible second option if Colston and Garcon do not sign with the Redskins.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Redskins Expected To Purse RT Eric Winston, According To Report

The Washington Redskins are expected to remain active in NFL free agency despite the NFL's cap penalties, and one area they are targeting to improve is the offensive line. The team is very interested in former Houston Texans right tackle Eric Winston, who was released in a cap-savings move earlier in the week, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

The 28-year old Winston has started all 16 games for the Texans in each of the last five years. The Redskins' incumbent right tackle is Jammal Brown, but he fell off last year thanks to injuries and advanced age. The team is also likely to look for an upgrade at guard, with Kory Lichtensteiger a free agent.

Redskins Salary Cap: Redskins, Cowboys Must Accept Half Their Cap Reductions In 2012 Offseason

A new wrinkle has emerged in the Case of the Missing Cap Room (with Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones playing the roles of the Hardy Boys). The NFL is reportedly insisting that the penalized teams must absorb at least half of the de jure cap hit this coming season.

A league source tells PFT that the teams will be required to absorb at least half of the cap consequences in 2012. For the Cowboys, it means $5 million in lost cap room. For the Redskins, $18 million disappears.

They can each choose to absorb more of the cap penalty in 2012, or they can push all of the other half to 2013.

You will recall this report from yesterday:

But of course, that report came out before the Redskins and Cowboys essentially flipped the NFL double middle fingers by claiming compliance in a pair of statements released Monday night. Would you really be surprised if the NFL switched up the punishment on both teams after those statements last night?

Anyway, Rich Campbell has the latest real-time math on the Redskins cap.

Those entirely expected cuts have bumped up the Redskins cap space to roughly $17 million, which certainly isn't bad, but certainly isn't as good as it could have been.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Expect Redskins To Be Aggressive Early, According To Report

The Washington Redskins made a trade over the weekend that makes free agency more important to their franchise in two ways. First, they now have a player (presumably) that needs talent put around him and secondly, they reduced their draft picks making free agency their best option to add top level talent. Throw in the penalty that the Redskins are reportedly facing, and this could make for a very interesting period. But according to John Clayton of ESPN, we can still expect Dan Snyder to be the same aggressive owner we have come to know.

That news should strike fear into the hearts of teams such as Chicago, which will likely go after Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson. Watch for the Redskins to target Jackson, Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal, Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and others. Snyder and the Redskins suffered a big blow Monday when the league took back $36 million of cap room for cap moves made in 2010, but he'll find a way to get whom he wants in free agency. Despite the cap hit, he's a player.

Would you expect anything else? Even with a penalty that could greatly reduce their resources, Dan Snyder is expected to make a big splash early in free agency.

PHOTO: At Least 8 Other Teams Did What Redskins And Cowboys Did In 2010

Sammy_c_headshot_medium

Here's what we wrote about the ludicrous salary cap penalties handed down to the Redskins and Cowboys by the NFL (and, more accurately, it's owners) Monday afternoon.

These penalties came about not as a result of any rule-breaking on the part of the Redskins or Cowboys, but as the result of collusion between the other 30 teams and a rubber-stamp by the Commissioner and the NFLPA. (Remember, back in 2010, the NFL saw nothing wrong with the bonuses paid to Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall that are now apparently beyond the pale.)

Well, our friends over at Hogs Haven have unearthed a chart that should make Redskins and Cowboys fans even more furious. It's after the jump.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Status Of Redskins Salary Cap Penalty Remains Unclear

NFL Free Agency is finally starting on Tuesday, and it's scheduled to start at 4 pm. But the Redskins are in a very difficult situation as they have just been assessed a cap penalty by the NFL that could cost them $36 million this year, or maybe next year, or maybe in both years. Unfortunately there are conflicting reports about how it will affect them totally, and no one really seems to know.

Now if you go to Pro Football Talk's twitter, you will find tweets that say that the Redskins can choose how much to allocate in each year and also a report that says they have to choose to take the whole lump in one of the two years. The again, there is this report from CSN Washington that says the Redskins have already been penalized half of the total sum for this season.

Schefter also said that the league has already reduced the Redskins' salary cap number on the website dedicated to such things by $18 million overnight. That would represent half of the cap penalty imposed.

It seems at this point that the only thing we know for sure is that we don't know exactly what the deal is for sure. In that very same article Adam Schefter is quoted as saying this is a battle that is just beginning. Expect lawyers to get involved and for the whole thing to get a lot worse before it gets better. The Redskins have already said that they plan on entering free agent with the same intentions that they were before these penalties were announced yesterday. Stay tuned. . .

NFL Free Agency 2012: Jets May Be Favorites To Land LaRon Landry, According To Report

LaRon Landry has been a difficult player to evaluate in terms of free agency because when he gets on the field he is so valuable to the Redskins defense, but he just has so much trouble staying healthy. But the market is thin on safeties this year, so somebody is going to play for the potential he showed in Washington a few years ago. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the Jets are a team that will show some interest and could be a perfect fit.

"They need a safety and Landry probably is the best one in a market watered down by three franchise tags. The Redskins' former first-round pick (sixth overall in 2007) is coming off two injury-plagued seasons, so maybe his asking price won't be crazy. He's a beast as an in-the-box safety, but there are questions about his coverage ability -- and that's where the Jets need help."

The Jets have been thin at safety for a few years, and they have suffered injuries there as well. They could be a perfect fit if the price is right. Jason Cole of Yahoo has a few other options, including returning to the Redskins.

The Redskins drafted Landry highly in the first round and invested a lot of time and money into him, I'm sure they don't want to see him flourish in another uniform. The question is whether or not the price is right for them.

Bruce Allen: Redskins Have Not Been Informed Of Salary Cap Penalty

The following statement was issued by Redskins Executive Vice President and General Manager Bruce Allen Monday evening.

The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.

We can't say that's the tack we expected from the Redskins. It certainly seems that we haven't heard the last of this punishment, which might now become a dispute.

For the record, here's the statement from the Cowboys, via Rich Tandler:

The Dallas Cowboys were in compliance with all league salary cap rules during the uncapped year. We look forward to the start of the free agency period where our commitment to improving our team remains unchanged.

NFL Releases Statement On Redskins And Cowboys Punishment

About three hours after word first came out that the NFL had taken away $36 million in cap space from the Washington Redskins and $10 million in cap space from the Dallas Cowboys, the league issued a statement on the matter, which has been reproduced in full:

The Management Council Executive Committee determined that the contract practices of a small number of clubs during the 2010 league year created an unacceptable risk to future competitive balance, particularly in light of the relatively modest salary cap growth projected for the new agreement's early years. To remedy these effects and preserve competitive balance throughout the league, the parties to the CBA agreed to adjustments to team salary for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. These agreed-upon adjustments were structured in a manner that will not affect the salary cap or player spending on a league-wide basis.

Update

Washington Redskins And Dallas Cowboys Punishment Agreed On By NFL, NFLPA, According To Report

Redskins vs. Cowboys is one of the great rivalries in the NFL. But when it comes to the salary cap penalties handed down to both teams by the league, the two franchises are unlikely allies.

We know the who and what of this story: The Redskins and Cowboys had $36 million and $10 million of cap space, respectively, taken away from them by the league Monday. The why, when and how of this story is more difficult to piece together, but some details are trickling out.

From ESPN's NFC East blogger Dan Graziano, who has come out strongly against the league's ruling, this tweet:

Rich Campbell of the Washington Times essentially provided confirmation of same with this tweet.

Meanwhile, Graziano just posted a Q&A on the NFC East blog, the first two questions and answers of which are reproduced below.

Q: What exactly did they do?

A: During the uncapped 2010 season, teams were repeatedly warned by the league not to structure contracts so that big money was assigned to 2010 in order to attain future-years cap relief. They were told there would be penalties if they did this. The Cowboys and the Redskins, to a greater extent than the league's other 30 teams, ignored these warnings and engaged in such behavior anyway. Miles Austin's contract with the Cowboys, which included a $17 million base salary in 2010, is being brought up as the prime example.

Q: How did they get caught?

A: The complaints against the Cowboys and the Redskins for engaging in perfectly legal behavior that violated no actual rules but only the collusive backroom dictates being issued by the league came not from the league office but from the other 30 teams, who were doing what they were told while the Cowboys and the Redskins were not. The other teams demanded action, since they were the good soldiers, and so the league decided it needed to take some.

So there you are.

In short, the NFL decided to stop acting like a legitimate business and start acting like a cartel. The fact that franchises owned by Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones, two of the NFL's most odious overdogs, bore the brunt of the punishment doesn't make it any less true.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Washington Redskins Release Oshiomogho Atogwe

With the sudden news of the Redskins losing cap space entering free agency, which starts Tuesday at 4 p.m., the team decided to release saftety Oshiomogho Atogwe on Monday afternoon. The move may have been planned out before news of the NFL's penalty came down, but this does come with some interesting timing.

This is also on the heels of the team announcing officially that they have released fullback Mike Sellers.

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have released safety Oshiomogho Atogwe (pronounced

oh-SHIM-ago uh-TOG-way) and fullback Mike Sellers.

Atogwe completed his seventh season in the NFL and first with the Redskins in 2011. He played in 13 games

with eight starts in 2011, finishing with 66 tackles (43 solo), three interceptions and 0.5 sacks.

In his 11 seasons (1998-2000, 2004-11) with the Redskins, Sellers played in 164 games with 56 starts,

compiling 158 rushing yards on 50 attempts and 1,022 receiving yards on 116 receptions and 19 total

touchdowns.

Sellers played in 12 games in 2011. He finished the season with one reception for 15 yards.

The move frees up $3.4 million in cap space, according to Rich Tandler of Real Redskins.

It should be interesting to see how the rest of the free agency period goes for the Redskins what with all this recent news.

NFL Takes $36 Million In Cap Space Away From Redskins, According To Report

Hey, remember what we said about the Redskins having a shade over $31 million in cap space to spend this offseason?

Seems like that’s not going to be the case after all.

Pro Football Talk has a partial explanation for why this is happening:

[T]he NFL instructed teams not to use the uncapped years as a way to dump money in order to ensure that cap numbers in years with a salary cap would be lower.

And there’s currently a rumor making the rounds that multiple teams will be smacked for doing just that: using 2010 as a cap dump aimed at either keeping the numbers manageable in 2009 and previously, or in 2011 and subsequently.

It widely was believed in 2010 that the Cowboys and Redskins had worked the system to take full advantage of the absence of a cap.

And it seems that two very familiar figures were behind this mess.

So there you go. Albert Haynesworth strikes again. 106.7 The Fan's Grant Paulsen does the quick and easy math for you.

The blowback from this will be interesting. Remember, one of the talking points in favor of the trade with the Rams for the No.2 pick was the idea that the Redskins could make up for the lost draft picks in free agency. Not so much anymore.

Redskins Release Fullback Mike Sellers, According To Report

Per CSN Washington's Rich Tandler, the Redskins have brought Mike Sellers' second term with the team to an end by releasing him.

Sellers originally signed with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent prior to the 1998 season after spending three years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL. After signing with Cleveland, Sellers spent part of the 2001 season with the Browns before being waived that November.

After spending two more seasons with Winnipeg, Sellers returned to the 'Skins in 2004. Though he spent most of his time as a blocking back and special teams man, Sellers managed to score 1,253 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns in his Washington career.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Redskins $31 Million Under Salary Cap Entering Free Agency

The NFL released the official salary cap numbers over the weekend, days before the official start of free agency. The Washington Redskins currently stand $31 million under the cap of $120.6 million.

The Redskins figure to be big players in free agency, with their main goal being to sign a wide receiver to complement whichever player they choose in the NFL Draft. Vincent Jackson and Pierre Garcon are two receivers consistently mentioned as having the Redskins' interest.

The Redskins may also be looking to sign a corner back to help with the secondary or even a new offensive lineman to help protect the Redskins' new quarterback.

Update

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Redskins 'Will Do Almost Whatever It Takes' To Acquire Vincent Jackon, According To Report

With Robert Griffin III almost certainly coming to Washington in this April's draft, there's no question that the Redskins will look to upgrade their wide receiver corps in free agency. One target who's long been on the wish list of 'Skins fans is Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Chargers.

The 29-year-old is set to officially become an unrestricted free agent when the league year begins Tuesday at 4 p.m., and according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers may be willing to let him go.

It is believed the Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears will be the most aggressive of Jackson’s suitors.

The Chargers’ seeming resignation that Jackson will go somewhere else could be due in part to their having long been aware of a team – thought to be the Redskins – that will do almost whatever it takes to get Jackson.

Now, it's not surprising that these rumors would surface in a year when the Redskins have plenty of cap room to take up with lavish contracts. These rumors always surface whenever the Redskins are involved. But judging by the shocking news of Friday night, it's not hard to imagine that there's something to Acee's report.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: Safety LaRon Landry Leaving, According To Report

It appears there will finally be some resolution to the "is he staying or is he going" conversation regarding Washington Redskins safety LaRon Landry. Via the National Football Post's Sunday Blitz:

It was a mutual decision between LaRon Landry and the Redskins to divorce. Landry will be leaving as a free agent. The Redskins made a decision to move on from the gifted safety in part because Landry has not stayed healthy. He still is recovering from an Achilles injury that landed him on injured reserve. Landry did not have surgery on the injury as the team advised him to do. Landry, meanwhile, is looking for a fresh start in a new environment. It is likely he will sign a short term deal.

This parting of ways between Washington and Landry has been speculated in circles for quite some time, so it shouldn't come as much as a surprise, though there will certainly be many Redskins fans sad to see the hard-hitting safety leave town.

Redskins Tender G Kory Lichtensteiger And K Graham Gano

As announced on the team's Twitter account Friday evening, the Washington Redskins have tendered guard Kory Lichtensteiger and kicker Graham Gano for the 2012 season.

Lichtensteiger was tendered at his original draft round (fourth) and will have his base salary doubled to $1.2 million. He will then become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2012 season.

Gano was given an exclusive rights free agency deal, meaning he will be a member of the Redskins at the veteran minimum salary.

Lichtensteiger has been praised for his run blocking abilities, and will be a key part to the play of the line going forward.

Gano was a solid kicker for the Redskins in 2011, making 31-of-36 attempts with just one miss inside 49 yards.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Fred Davis Given Franchise Tag By Washington Redskins, According To Report

It appears that Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis has been given the franchise tag according to reports.

The designation of Davis now give the Redskins an inside track to resign the tight end. If the Redskins allow Davis to sign somewhere else, they will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation from whatever team signs him. This does also raise the question of whether or not the Redskins will re-sign safety LaRon Landry. Although the Redskins have a lot of cap space to play with, they may not re-sign Landry because of his injury concerns.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Fred Davis Likely To Receive Franchise Tag From Washington Redskins, According To Report

As the Monday deadline approaches for teams to designate their franchise players, it is becoming increasingly likely that the Washington Redskins are going to use their franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis according to reports.

An article published by Washington Post Redskins insider Mike Jones says that Davis could possibly receive the tag as early as today. Davis is set to be an unrestricted free agent when March 13 rolls around. Designating him the franchise player would prevent that. In addition, if he is designated and is signed by another team, the Redskins would acquire two first-round draft picks from the team that signs him.

Davis is coming off a season where he caught 59 passes for 796 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. He was suspended for the final four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, but head coach Mike Shanahan seems to be committed to bringing Davis back onto the team.

2012 Free Agency: Vincent Jackson Could Be Target For Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins will be looking to add some playmakers in free agency during the 2012 NFL offseason, including at the wide receiver position. One potential free agent wide receiver the Redskins could target is San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Several people in the sport said a leading target for the Redskins could be San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson. The issue with Jackson, as with some of the other top receivers with expiring contracts, is whether he will remain available after Monday's deadline for teams to use their franchise-player tags. The Chargers, according to one source, have not ruled out using their franchise-player designation on Jackson but seem to be leaning against doing so.

While many believe Jackson will not receive the franchise tag from the Chargers, it's still a possibility. Some believe the Chargers will still franchise tag Jackson, but even if they don't he's going to pull in a big haul contract wise in free agency.

Redskins Free Agency 2012: London Fletcher Changes Agents In Advance Of Free Agency

London Fletcher, the unquestioned leader of the Redskins defense, will hit free agency in a few weeks, and the Redskins are aiming to keep him in the fold. But he aims to measure his interest around the league, and in a little bit of a turn, he has decided to go with new representation. According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, Fletcher has changed his agents and will now be represented by CAA.

Fletcher is no longer represented by Drew Rosenhaus and has hired CAA and agent Ben Dogra, according to league sources. Redskins general manager Bruce Allen has said that the team wants Fletcher back, and that the 14-year veteran wants to return.

I'm not sure what this means about Fletcher's intentions in free agency, but I don't think that it will change the Redskins plans to bring him back.

NFL Free Agency Rumors: Washington Redskins Pursuing A WR, Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garcon Top Candidates

One of the biggest needs that the Washington Redskins would need to address in the offseason is at wide receiver. As of right now, they appear to be thinking about testing the free agent market to address that need according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Names that have already been floated about as possibilities for the Redskins to pursue in free agency are Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Chargers and Pierre Garcon of the Indianapolis Colts.

Both receivers had decent seasons last year for their respective teams, Jackson catching 60 passes for 1,106 yards, his third 1,000 yard season in the last four, and nine touchdowns. Garcon, despite not having quarterback Peyton Manning the entire season, caught 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns.

There is no shortage of wide receivers up for free agency this offseason. Including Jackson and Garcon, Reggie Wayne, Dwayne Bowe, Marques Colston, Stevie Johnson, Plaxico Burress and Mario Manningham are all eligible free agents, provided their respective teams do not use their franchise tag on them by the deadline on Monday.

Redskins Re-Sign Defensive End Darrion Scott

The Washington Redskins continued with some early moves in what figures to be a busy offseason. On Monday, the team announced that defensive end Darrion Scott has been re-signed.

Scott was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. He would have been free to sign with other teams when free agency begins on March 13.

Monday’s move maintains some depth along the defensive line. Scott is a reserve defensive end. According to Pro Football Focus, he saw just 112 snaps during the 2011 season, mostly in pass rushing situations.

Minnesota drafted Scott in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played there until 2007. After that, he spent some time playing for the Florida Tuskers in the UFL, where he was coached by Jim Haslett. Washington signed Scott in April 2010, not too long after Haslett was hired as their defensive coordinator.

2012 NFL Combine: Sunday Schedule And Preview

Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine is traditionally a marquee day. The list of potential draftees being poked, prodded and judged lightens a bit, as the kickers, punters, tight ends and offensive lineman exit Indianapolis, with the "star" positions taking their place in the workout spotlight: the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. In other words, Sunday at the 2012 NFL Combine is going to be an exciting day for Washington Redskins fans, as the team has obvious needs at two of those three skill positions.

While the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers show off their speed and strength in skills drills, defensive lineman and linebackers will be undergoing psychological tests and having interviews with teams. Defensive backs, the last group to arrive in Indianapolis, will be having their measurements taken and undergoing medical exams.

The Redskins brass will most definitely be keeping an eye out today for possible quarterbacks and wide receivers to add depth to the roster. Today is the day annually when some wide outs and running backs break stopwatches, while others will appear to be running in cement shoes, dropping their stock in the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft. Should be fun times.

The entire NFL Scouting Combine schedule may be found here. The NFL Network will broadcast drills beginning at 9:00 a.m. and also stream the workouts online.

Redskins Sign Will Montgomery To Four-Year Contract Extension, According To Report

Mike Jones of The Washington Post got this tidbit straight from the horse's mouth.

The Washington Redskins have reached an agreement to retain center Will Montgomery, the seven-year veteran confirmed.

Montgomery, who took over as starting center last season, was set to become a free agent, but has agreed to a four-year deal and won’t hit the open market on March 13.

Montgomery was one of two offensive linemen to play all 16 games in 2011 (Chris Chester was the other; now there's one for trivia night) and spent time at both center and left guard, where he moved after Kory Lichtensteiger went down with a knee injury.

Montgomery would have officially been a free agent on March 13, and given how many quarterbacks the Redskins have been linked to this offseason, both via free agency and by the draft, we deem it highly relevant that Washington makes sure their offensive line is as secure as possible entering training camp.

Hankerson had hoped that surgery would not be necessary and told a user who asked about his hip that he "jus wanted to be safe n b ready."

Hankerson tore the labrum in his hip while being tackled in the 20-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins on November 13. The rookie from Miami (FL) only appeared in four games in 2011 and started just two of them. He finished the season with just 13 catches for 163 yards.

2012 NFL Free Agency: Fred Davis, LaRon Landry Candidates For Redskins Franchise Tag

Monday represents the first day that NFL teams can place a franchise tag on one of their free agents that they would like to keep. The fellas over at SB Nation put together a feature on which player from every team is most likely to receive the franchise tag ranked in order of likelihood. They name a couple of options for the Redskins before ultimately settling on Fred Davis, which corroborates the reports we've heard.

Fred Davis. LaRon Landry is a possibility, too, but both players have concerns when it comes to a long term deal. Davis will be suspended for a year if he tests positive again, and Landry has had major injury issues. Reports out of Washington indicate Davis likely gets the tag at about $5.5 million.

Fred Davis had a breakout season last year, but he represents a fair amount of risk in his signing. A franchise tag might be a great way to give him a trial run to turn things around before offering him a big money long-term deal next offseason.

Redskins Hire Ex-Player Phillip Daniels As Director Of Player Development

The Washington Redskins have hired former player Phillip Daniels as their director of player development, it was announced on Friday. Daniels spent 15 years in the NFL as a defensive lineman, which included seven with the Redskins. He retired after the 2010 with 62.0 sacks and 329 tackles in his career.

Daniels enjoyed one of his best NFL seasons with the Redskins in 2005 when he had 8.0 sacks and 48 tackles. He also knocked down eight passes that year.

"We welcome Phillip back to the Redskins family," Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen said in a team release. "His 15 years of NFL experience will be a great asset for our football team."

Daniels' exact responsibilities with the team were not spelled out in the release, but it's believed that it will likely be a mix of front office and coaching duties. He will likely work with some of the younger players, and could have some input into the Redskins' draft.

LaRon Landry On Why He Has Put Off Achilles Surgery

LaRon Landry missed a good amount of time in 2011 because of an Achilles injury, but he still hasn't gotten surgery which could expedite the healing process. A lot of fans are questioning why he wouldn't want to go under the knife. Landry explains his intentions in an article by Grant Paulsen on CBS.

"It’s brutal," Landry said. "It’s like a roller coaster. A major surgery is quite hard. You’re changing the structure of your body and trying to correct it. Recovery time is crucial, rehab is crucial and you sometimes lose range-of-motion and lose strength. The strength will eventually come, but as far as range of motion — you might not get the same thing that you had before. I don’t want that."

That's all well and good, but Landry has been struggling with this injury for a while now, and range of motion isn't as important if you can't get on the field. But I'm sure Landry is getting good advice from some medical professionals, so this is likely a calculated decision.

Redskins Offseason: Fred Davis Will Receive Franchise Tag, According To Report

Now that the Super Bowl is over, the 31 teams that didn't earn hardware this year will start focusing their attention on what they can do to improve their chances next year. The Redskins have a lot of work to do, and that includes some important decisions on impending free agents. According to Rich Tandler of NBC Sports, the Redskins plan to put the Franchise tag on Fred Davis, ensuring that he will be with the team for at least one more year. This raises an important question, what does that mean for LaRon Landry?

Should the Redskins use the franchise tag on Davis, they could not use it on LaRon Landry. The safety, once considered one of the franchise cornerstones, will also be a free agent but his future is clouded by injury. He has decided to put off a decision to have surgery to repair an Achilles injury that has cost him 15 games over the past two seasons.

If the Redskins don't Franchise Landry, it is hard to see a scenario in which they would bring him back on a long term deal, especially considering those injury concerns Tandler mentioned.

Washington Redskins Would Target Kyle Orton And Not Matt Flynn, According To Report

Super Bowl Sunday has been a busy day for the rumors and reports surrounding the Washington Redskins' quarterback situation for next season. Adam Schefter tweeted that the Skins would immediately pursue Peyton Manning if he were released by the Indianapolis Colts. He also reported that the Skins were preparing to target free agents Kyle Orton and Matt Flynn.

Ryan O'Halloran of CSN Washington updated that report regarding free agents Flynn and Orton. O'Halloran reports that there is a consensus in the Redskins' organization to pursue Orton, but not Flynn.

Flynn, with all of two NFL starts, has been likened by some Redskins personnel as a lesser version of Kevin Kolb -- and they didn't like him, either.

Orton and Skins quarterback Rex Grossman have a history together, and competed for the starting job in Chicago. O'Halloran writes that Grossman, a free agent, would likely be free to sign with another team if Orton lands in Washington. With Manning's health still up in the air, it appears Orton is target number one at this point.

Peyton Manning Would Be A Target For Washington Redskins, According To Report

Much has been made about whether Peyton Manning, if released by the Indianapolis Colts, would be pursued by the Washington Redskins. Obviously, Manning's health is a key issue in any pursuit occurring, but according to ESPN's Adam Schefter the Redskins are expected to go after the quarterback if here were released by Indianapolis.

If Peyton Manning is released, Redskins are expected to pursue him. Redskins also prepared to pursue free agents Matt Flynn and Kyle Orton.

If Manning is healthy, teams would be crazy not to kick the tires on a quarterback of his caliber. But therein lies the rub - no one truly knows yet the quarterback's health. The Redskins are obviously in need of an upgrade at the quarterback position, be it in the draft or free agency, so Mike Shanahan and Co. should definitely be looking into any and all viable options.

Peyton Manning: Washington Redskins Interested, But Questions Abound, According To Report

A Washington Post article published Monday morning speculated about a possible Peyton Manning-Washington Redskins marriage. The Post’s Mike Jones quotes an anonymous team official who said that the Redskins, like just about anyone, would like to have Peyton Manning. But there are plenty of ifs. Manning is coming off neck surgery and moreover has not yet been released from the Indianapolis Colts, both potential deal-breakers.

But that doesn’t mean people aren’t talking. The Redskins official said,

No. 1, is he going to be released? No. 2, is he going to be healthy? No. 3, at the end of the day, is he willing to come back and play in the NFL. We don’t know those questions. I think everybody would want Peyton Manning, if he was healthy. You’d be crazy not to want Peyton Manning if he was healthy.

The article goes on to discuss the slim-pickings that is this year’s crop of free agent QBs. Drew Brees is the headliner, but he doesn’t figure to leave New Orleans; Alex Smith is a distant second, and he, too, is likely to re-sign with the 49ers. There is also Green Bay backup Matt Flynn; Kansas City journeyman Kyle Orton; ex-Redskin Jason Campbell; Donovan McNabb and Vince Young.

Peyton Manning's Age 'Not An Issue' For Washington Redskins If Healthy, Kyle Shanahan Says

Amid rumors in recent weeks about the Washington Redskins' interest in potential free agent quarterback Peyton Manning, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was given a chance to speak on the subject Friday when he joined Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro on ESPN980's 'The Sports Fix'.

"Everybody knows Peyton Manning is, if not the best quarterback to ever play the game, he's tied for it," Shanahan said of Manning, who is expected to be released by the Colts before he is to cash in on a $28 million dollar option in March.

Many are concerned that Manning's age (will be 36 in March) combined with his recovering neck injury may be a cause for concern for a quarterback-needy team like the Redskins to try to sign him should he become available.

But Shanahan was quick to note that health, not age, would be his only concern should the Redskins attempt to acquire the four-time NFL MVP.

"I know he's up there in age, but if he's healthy, age is not an issue," said Shanahan. "That guy takes care of his body..his arm's not leaving. He can take the hits. You just hope his neck's alright, and he'll be Peyton Manning."

With quarterback being such a glaring need for the Redskins, it seems logical that should Manning become available, that the team would at the very least entertain that option, if granted a clean bill of health.

"If he can recover," Shanahan continued, "and the doctors say he's healthy, and he says he's healthy, then that's enough for me."

The full audio of Shanahan's interview can be found here.

Ike Hilliard Hired As Washington Redskins' Wide Receivers Coach, Bob Slowik Reassigned To Linebackers

The Washington Redskins have quickly filled two of their remaining position coach vacancies, hiring former New York Giants receiver Ike Hilliard to be the team's wide receiver coach and moving former defensive backs coach Bob Slowik to linebackers coach, according to ESPN 980. Hilliard replaces the fired Keenan McCardell, while Slowik replaces Lou Spanos, who left to become UCLA's defensive coordinator.

Hilliard comes after being the assistant wide receivers coach for the Miami Dolphins last season, his first as a coach of any kind in the NFL. The 35-year old carved out a 12-year career, mostly for the Giants. Slowik has been with the Redskins since Mike Shanahan came aboard in 2009, but has been reassigned after the team hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris. Morris will take on the responsibilities of Slowik and fired safeties coach Steve Jackson.

Washington Redskins Officially Hire Raheem Morris As Defensive Backs Coach

The Washington Redskins officially announced the long-rumored hiring of Raheem Morris as the team's defensive backs coach on Monday afternoon, continuing their offseason coaching-staff shake-up. Morris became available when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired him as their head coach on Jan. 2, following a 4-12 season in which they lost each of their last 10 games.

Morris' coaching career began in 1998 as a graduate assistant coach at Hofstra Univesity. The following season, he moved to Cornell, serving as its defensive backs coach and special teams assistant. He returned to Hofstra for two seasons as its defensive backs coach, and then made the jump to the professional level, taking Tampa Bay's defensive quality control coach in 2002. Morris continued to advance in the Buccaneers organization, spent one year as the Kansas St. Wildcats' defensive coordinator, and then returned to Tampa Bay as defensive backs coach. At age 32, he became the NFL's youngest head coach in 2009.

Though the Bucs struggled defensively under Morris, they showed some promise in defending against the pass, ranking No. 7 in passing yards allowed and No. 13 in passing touchdowns allowed during their surprising 2010 campaign. Tampa Bay went 10-6 that season, with its seven-win improvement over the previous year standing as the league's best.

Morris could take over some of the responsibilities Steve Jackson had as Washington's safeties coach. The Redskins dismissed him in January after seven seasons with the club.

Lou Spanos To Leave Washington Redskins, Become UCLA Football Defensive Coordinator, Accoring To Report

The Washington Redskins' defensive coaching staff will need yet another newcomer, as linebackers coach Lou Spanos is expected to take the defensive coordinator position with UCLA, according to the Los Angeles Times. Spanos departs after spending two years with the Redskins, helping them transition into a 3-4 defense.

Lou Spanos, linebacker coach for the Washington Redskins, is expected to be hired as UCLA’s defensive coordinator, according to a person familiar with the situation who is not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Spanos' work can be seen with the development of Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan and Perry Riley, who team with London Fletcher to form one of the stronger linebacking corps in the league. Prior to being with the Redskins, Spanos was an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers for 15 years, coaching on three Super Bowl-winning teams.

Raheem Morris Hired By Washington Redskins As Defensive Backs Coach

The Washington Redskins reportedly offered former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris a job on their staff. The Redskins have in fact done so, according to a report by Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.

According to Stroud, Raheem Morris will coach the Redskins defensive backs. The hiring comes on the heels of a Redskins assistant coaches Steve Jackson and Keenan McCardell being informed they would not be back with the team, according to a report by Mike Jones of the Washington Post. Jackson has been the Redskins safeties coach while McCardell had coached the wide receivers the past two years.

Jackson, Washington's longtime safeties coach, and McCardell, the Redskins' wide receivers coach the past two seasons under Shanahan, were informed Monday they would not be offered new contracts. Jackson and McCardell, the sources said, were not among several assistants who received contract extensions at the beginning of the season.

Apparently, Shanahan intends to bring back the majority of the group that has an 11-21 record during his two seasons leading the organization.

Graham Gano Injury: Washington Redskins' Kicker Fractures Bones In Back, Reportedly Out 6-8 Weeks

Washington Redskins kicker Graham Gano suffered a serious back injury in the team's final regular-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post. Gano suffered two fractured bones in his lower back, and his recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks.

The injury happened when he was trying to make a tackle after his 36-yard field goal was blocked. Gano tried to tackle Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but he flipped the ball to a teammate to keep the play going. Eventually, Jason Babin nailed Gano in the back, which caused the injury. Gano did manage to kick an extra point and a kickoff after the play.

Gano is a free agent this season. He hit 31 of 41 field goals, but had five of his kicks blocked for different reasons. He also nailed a career-high 59-yard kick during the year.

NFL Offseason 2012: Raheem Morris Says Washington Redskins Offered Him A Job

Raheem Morris met with the Washington Redskins last week, presumably with the job of defensive backs coach as the central point of discussion. Now Morris is claiming that the Redskins did in fact offer him a job, according to Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, but that he is still weighing his offers.

"With Washington, it was more of an offer, but I also felt great coming out of my talks with Minnesota,'' said Morris, who interviewed for the defensive coordinator job with the Vikings.

"We should know something pretty soon because you can see jobs shaking out all over the league right now. I'll be back somewhere next season. I'm not going to just stay at home – I don't have that in me. I'm a football coach and we do what we do.''

Morris would be a nice get for the Redskins because he has experience in the position they want him to coach, as well as head coaching experience. But if the Vikings are offering him a defensive coordinator position, you have to think he'd jump at that one.

Washington Redskins Considering Raheem Morris As Defensive Backs Coach, According To Report

The Washington Redskins finished at 5-11 this year, one game worse than their 6-10 finish a year ago. Needless to say, the organization will go through some changes before we see it next Fall. Some of those changes might come to the coaching staff, and Jason la Canfora of NFL.com confirms that the team has met with Raheem Morris and might be interested in bringing him on board to help with the defensive backfield.

The Washington Redskins are considering Raheem Morris for a position coaching the team's defensive backs, according to league sources. The Redskins are in the process of shaking up their coaching staff following a 5-11 season. Morris interviewed with the team this week after he was fired Monday as head coach of the Buccaneers following three seasons in Tampa Bay.

Morris has held the DB Coach position at various times throughout his young career, and still has a lot of potential to evolve into more as a coach. He could be a nice shot of youth into the Redskins organization and help mix things up a little bit.

Redskins Meet With Former Buccaneers Coach Raheem Morris

About this time last year Raheem Morris had led the Bucs to a surprising season and was considered one of the best young coaches in the NFL. What a difference a year makes. He lost the Buccaneers as a team this year as they finished the year with a ten game losing streak. He has since been let go by the team. According to George Wallace of WTOP via Hogs Haven, the Redskins met with Morris recently.

We can only assume that they were talking about Morris joining the staff in some capacity, and based on his experience, defensive backs coach might be the safest bet. But he could potentially also be a candidate for the defensive coordinator spot if Jim Haslett moves on to a different opportunity.

NFL Free Agency 2012: Adam Carriker Tweets He May Leave Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins have several free agents to deal with this summer, but one that should get some attention is Adam Carriker, who had a career year on a much-improved defensive line. Based on this tweet, though, the Redskins may have trouble retaining him.

Picture_29_medium

Carriker later told a fan "no idea" when he was asked if he was coming back.

Carriker had his strongest season as a pro, but as CSN Washington's Rich Tandler notes, the Redskins may not want to pay him the money he desires.

The issue, as is so often the case, may turn out to be money. Carriker will want to be paid as a starter. The Redskins may be reluctant to do so as they likely are planning on him being depth.

Jarvis Jenkins, the team's second-round pick last year, is waiting in the wings after being impressive before a season-ending knee injury.
