Panthers vs. Redskins: Brandon Meriweather hopes to return against Carolina

Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

Brandon Meriweather is hoping to make his Redskins debut against the Carolina Panthers.

Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather stated on Wednesday that he is hoping to play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 9 action Sunday.

Meriweather has yet to play for the Redskins since signing a two-year contract worth $6 million with the team this past offseason due to a sprained MCL and PCL in his left knee. Having originally sustained the injury in the preseason, Meriweather re-aggravated the same knee in an accident during warm-ups prior to the team's Week 4 meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In his media availability on Wednesday, the 28-year-old stated that he feels better now then he did before that game and is hoping to test out his knee this week in order to determine if he potentially could play against Carolina. If he is unable to play, he will shoot for a return after the team's upcoming bye week.

Meriweather returned to practice last Wednesday but sat out activity on Thursday and Friday due to soreness. He told CSN Washington he will err on the side of caution:

"I'm going to go out and push it a little bit and see where it goes from there. If it goes good, maybe you all will see me out there this week. If it goes bad, I'll be out another week."
