Brandon Meriweather Injury: Redskins safety out for year with torn ACL

Patrick Smith

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL on Sunday. Meriweather was making his return from a different knee injury and his season ends with just one appearance for Washington.

Brandon Meriweather's first season with the Washington Redskins is over after just one game, head coach Mike Shanahan announced on Monday, saying that the safety tore his right ACL in Sunday's 31-6 victory.

Meriweather came out of Sunday's game in the second half, but did not believe it was serious and after the game he said that it was merely precautionary. As Shanahan said at his Monday press conference, it was in fact more serious than that and Meriweather will be out for the rest of the year.

In the one game that he played in 2012, Meriweather had seven tackles, two pass breakups and an interception, contributing to a Washington defensive effort that did not give up a touchdown to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Meriweather joined the Redskins as a free agent in the offseason. He was initially injured during the preseason and missed the first nine games of the season with sprained ligaments in his knee. Meriweather was expected to return sooner, but he re-injured the knee by colliding with teammate Aldrick Robinson in pregame warmups during Week 4.

The Redskins are back in action on Thursday, playing a Thanksgiving Day game on the road against the Dallas Cowboys at 4:15 p.m. ET.
