Redskins lose out on Jason Babin waiver claim

Matt Kartozian-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Redskins tried to claim Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles, but lost out to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Washington Redskins were one of three teams to try to claim defensive end Jason Babin after the Philadelphia Eagles released the 2011 All-Pro Tuesday, but lost out to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 32-year-old Babin still has nearly $2 million left on his contract for this season, and the Eagles cut him loose in the midst of a seven-game losing streak where pretty much everything has been lacking defensively. The Redskins, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars all put in a claim for Babin. The Jaguars won out Wednesday as a result of their 2-9 record, the lowest of the three teams involved.

Babin had 18 sacks last year, third-best in the league. He was a Pro Bowler each of the last two seasons, but has dropped off this year, with only 21 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. Rich Campbell of the Washington Times writes that Babin would have been a pass-rushing stand-up linebacker in the team's 3-4 front, rather than a conventional defensive end.
