2012 NFL Free Agency: Fred Davis Likely To Receive Franchise Tag From Washington Redskins, According To Report

As the Monday deadline approaches for teams to designate their franchise players, it is becoming increasingly likely that the Washington Redskins are going to use their franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis according to reports.

An article published by Washington Post Redskins insider Mike Jones says that Davis could possibly receive the tag as early as today. Davis is set to be an unrestricted free agent when March 13 rolls around. Designating him the franchise player would prevent that. In addition, if he is designated and is signed by another team, the Redskins would acquire two first-round draft picks from the team that signs him.

Davis is coming off a season where he caught 59 passes for 796 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. He was suspended for the final four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, but head coach Mike Shanahan seems to be committed to bringing Davis back onto the team.
