Now that the Redskins have made the dramatic move to trade up to the No. 2 overall selection in the draft to select their franchise quarterback, the organization now faces two paths: The road back to relevance, or to continued mediocrity.

After issuing this joint statement with Rams General Manager Les Snead confirming the deal that the two made earlier this week, Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen doubled down on his organization's gamble later Saturday evening.
Speaking at a Washington Football Legends event, Allen told the assembled media that the Redskins just couldn't resist the temptation to make the deal that has the entire NFL talking.
Bruce Allen on trading up to No. 2: "Clearly we fell in love with two players, and we believe one of those players will be a great Redskin."

BruceAllen on cost of trade "We understand it was a heavy price but when you bought your home you probably wanted to pay a little less too."
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) March 11, 2012
Boy, I wonder which two players he's talking about. And, of course ...
Allen on Dan Snyder: "He gave us his 1000 percent support. He wanted us to do what we thought was the appropriate thing & he embraced it."

Yes, we're sure he did.

The Washington Redskins acquired the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from the St. Louis Rams late Friday evening, with the intent of drafting Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III in that number two slot. It appears it is not just the Redskins who are enamored with Griffin - the quarterback is also a big fan of head coach Mike Shanahan.
Via Adam Schein of Sirius XM NFL Radio:
"I grew up as a Broncos fan. I would love to play for Coach Shanahan. I love his system." RGIII on SiriusXM Blitz at Combine.

In case you have been living under a rock the past 12 hours, the Washington Redskins made a deal with the St. Louis Rams late Friday night to secure the number two pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, presumably to draft uber talented Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. As you might imagine, news of that magnitude elicited plenty of reaction, and what better place to look for those reactions than Twitter.
Via the fine folks at Hogs Haven, here are a few select tweets regarding the move. I picked one tweet each from a Redskins player, the media, and Darnell Dockett, because, well, he's Darnell Dockett.
This next month is gonna be crazy! Free agency, the draft, and a big trade has already happened folks!
— Adam Carriker (@BigPoppaPump94) March 10, 2012
Are three No. 1's & a No. 2 a ton to give up? Yes. And trading them for a potential franchise-changing presence at QB was the right move.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) March 10, 2012
LMFAOOOOOO the Redskins gave up that ricky williams shit. LOL a whole draft for RG3 LOL I'm dying LOL I'm gonna wear a skins hat tonight!

The Washington Redskins' trade with the St. Louis Rams should make it easy for people to write out the top two picks of their 2012 NFL Mock Draft. In trading the No. 6 overall pick, a 2012 second-round pick, a 2013 first-round pick and a 2014 first-round pick to move up to No. 2, the Redskins all but assured that they will take Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.
The Redskins hope that Griffin can be their signal-caller for the next 10 years and beyond, figuring that the heavy price to pay was necessary to land that kind of player. The alternatives were signing a retread free agent, picking someone like Ryan Tannehill at No. 6 or sticking with Rex Grossman and John Beck.
The Rams, meanwhile, will have a chance to replenish their depth with the extra picks. The latest NFL Mock Draft has them picking wide receiver Justin Blackman at No. 6.

The Washington Redskins reportedly acquired the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from the St. Louis Rams for first-round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well as a second-round pick in 2012. The expectation is that the Redskins will use the pick to select Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. This led to one report suggesting, understandably, that the Redskins had taken themselves out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.
However, that may not be the case after all. In what may be one of the juiciest reports yet, ESPN's Adam Schefter suggests the Redskins will still try to go after Manning to pair with Griffin.
Trade will not change Redskins plans in pursuing Peyton Manning. Intend to talk with and try to sign him, even if considered a longshot.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 10, 2012
Robert Griffin III and Peyton Manning? That certainly seems like a crazy fantasy scenario. However, this all assumes Manning would even be interested in playing for a team that has a high draft pick waiting in the wings.

The Washington Redskins pulled off an enormous blockbuster deal on Friday night, trading a haul of draft picks to the St. Louis Rams to move up four spots in the 2012 NFL Draft. With the No. 2 overall pick, the Skins will undoubtedly select Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. RG3 built on his incredible Heisman season at Baylor with a dynamic combine workout that sealed his spot as, at worst, the second best prospect heading into the 2012 NFL Draft.
The Skins swooped in with the offer to St. Louis after it became clear that Peyton Manning did not intend to sign with Washington. Via @JasonLaCanfora:
Four teams were deep in talks for 2nd overall pick. Skins submitted winning bid Thurs when Peyton Manning turned elsewhere
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 10, 2012
Along with Andrew Luck, Griffin III is one of the best quarterback prospects in the draft in a decade, and projected to be a franchise quarterback. And the Skins gave up that kind of haul in order to move up and take him.
Via @JasonLaCanfora:
In all, the Skins trade 6th overall in 2012, plus 2012 2nd rounder, and 1st rounders in 2013 and 2014 to move up 4 spots for RG3 ...

The Washington Redskins have agreed to a trade with the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, according to a report from Fox's Jay Glazer. The Skins will be giving up three first round picks, according to Glazer, who tweeted the scoop late Friday night.
Via @JayGlazer:
"Major scoopage: Redskins have agreed to a trade w Rams for #2 pick of draft. Rams and Skins swap first rounders this yr w Rams also getting 2 future #1s and additional picks. Story coming on fox sports dot com"
The Skins were one of a handful of teams bidding for the No. 2 pick, which will almost certainly be used to draft Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.
Adam Schefter supplemented Glazer's report, adding that a second round pick is also part of the deal.

UPDATE: Just a little bit of bookkeeping from ESPN.
The trade, first reported by FoxSports.com, cannot be signed off on, turned in and processed until the new league year starts Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, but it is expected to become official then.
