Redskins Vs. Rams 2012 Reaction: Josh Morgan's Play Only One Of Several Washington Mistakes

The Washington Redskins lost to the St. Louis Rams Sunday in a chippy, penalty filled game, 31-28.

The defining play of the game took place with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Redskins wide receiver Josh Morgan caught a third down pass from Robert Griffin III and although he was tackled just short of the first down marker, Morgan had the Redskins within field goal range. However, Morgan lost his cool, threw the ball at a Rams defender and incurred an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, pushing his team out of field goal range.

Kevin Ewoldt of SB Nation's Washington Redskins blog, Hogs Haven, listed that play among several others which led to the Redskins' loss.

Anyone grading the coaching staff across the Redskins Offense, Defense, and Special Teams would probably give F's across the board. Kyle Shanahan called a decent game at least. The blame is plenty to go around due to:

  • The horrible defensive scheme to play zone all day long.
  • Poor special teams play again. Another blocked punt up the gut.
  • The dropped Aldrick Robinson bomb to give the Redskins lead.
  • The wretched officiating to allow the game to get so fiesty and chippy all day long.
  • Josh Morgan's bonehead penalty knocking the Redskins out of field goal range.
  • Shanahan's decision to kick a 63-yard FG to tie the game.
  • How did Bradford have so much time when THREE OL starters were out? Not to mention their backup Left Tackle Wayne Hunter went down too. Ugh.
The Washington Redskins enter their Week 3 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals with a 1-1 record, tied for second in the NFC East.

NFL Injury Report: Redskins Lose Adam Carriker, Brian Orakpo In Loss To Rams

The Redskins lost to the Rams on Sunday, and they may have lost a pair of key defensive contributors for an extended period of time, as well. Both defensive end Adam Carriker and linebacker Brian Orakpo left the game with potentially serious injuries.

Orakpo appears to have injured the same pectoral muscle that forced him to undergo surgery after 2011, and is expected to miss some time after the injury. He's expected to undergo further tests on Monday as the Redskins try to determine how much time he is going to miss.

Carriker was hurt just 21 seconds into the game, and spent the game watching from the sidelines with his knee heavily wrapped. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, and coach Mike Shanahan said that the injury "didn't look good."

Cornerback Josh Wilson also left the game in the third quarter. Wilson suffered a concussion, and there is no word yet on his status for the game against the Bengals.

Redskins Vs. Rams Blog Reaction: 'Where To Start With This One?'

The easy reaction is to blame Josh Morgan for the Washington Redskins' 31-28 loss Sunday, but his late 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was far from the only factor. The penalty made a difficult potential game-tying field goal impossible after the team had already put itself in a position to lose late against the lowly St. Louis Rams.

Kevin Ewoldt of Redskins blog Hogs Haven found problems with every aspect of a team whose defense gave up 31 points to the Rams and whose offense couldn't find the end zone in the final quarter:

Anyone grading the coaching staff across the Redskins Offense, Defense, and Special Teams would probably give F's across the board. Kyle Shanahan called a decent game at least.

Ewoldt cited poor defensive schemes and bad play by the defensive line as reasons for the loss.

The bright side for the Redskins is obviously Robert Griffin III, who might have thrown the first pick of his NFL career, but accounted for all three of Washington's touchdowns and, as Ewoldt put it, "sure throws a pretty deep ball".

Adam Carriker Injury: Redskins Lineman Will Have MRI Monday, According To Report

Washington Redskins defensive lineman Adam Carriker's right knee was injured early in the first quarter Sunday in the team's 31-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams. While engaged with a St. Louis offensive lineman, Carriker's knee was rolled up on, and he immediately left the game, having to be helped off the field. After the game, it was announced Carriker would need a MRI. Via Tarik El-Bashir of Comcast SportsNet:

Adding insult to actual injury, this was El-Bashir's follow-up Carriker tweet:

Redskins Injury Update: Mike Shanahan Talks About Adam Carriker, Josh Wilson, Brian Orakpo Injuries

The Washington Redskins were defeated by the St. Louis Rams, 31-28, on Sunday at the Edwards Jones Dome.

After the game, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said that defensive end Adam Carriker, cornerback Josh Wilson and linebacker Brian Orakpo had sustained injuries but did not give a timetable for the return of any of the players.

Carriker sustained a knee injury in the first quarter of the game and did not return. Carriker will have an MRI but Shanahan expects him to have surgery. Orakpo had a right shoulder injury in the second quarter. He briefly re-entered the game before leaving for good with what the team described as a shoulder strain. Josh Wilson sustained what Shanahan described as a mild concussion when Wilson was hit on Rams running back Daryl Richardson's long run in the fourth quarter. Wilson had started the scoring in the game on a 30-yard fumble return touchdown in the first quarter.

Redskins Vs. Rams: Josh Morgan Penalty Costs Redskins Late In 4th

The most significant play of the fourth quarter occurred with 1:18 left to play after Josh Morgan caught a pass from Robert Griffin III and advanced to the 29-yard line, picking up 7 yards and leaving the Redskins with a 4th-and-1 situation.

If the Redskins had been able to try a potential game-tying field goal attempt, Billy Cundiff would have had a 46-yard try facing him. But he never got the chance.

That's because after Cortland Finnegan shoved Morgan following the whistle, Morgan fired the ball straight into Finnegan's torso.

657437588_medium

The officials called unsportsmanlike conduct on the Redskins receiver, a penalty which pushed the Redskins back to the St. Louis 44. Cundiff's resulting 62-yard try was short, and well to the right.

Two kneel-downs later, the Redskins had suffered their first loss of the season.

Redskins Vs. Rams Final Score: Washington Goes Down In St. Louis, 31-28

The Washington Redskins were defeated by the St. Louis Rams in Week 2 of NFL action on Sunday, 31-28. A skim of the stat sheet shows that third down efficiency was one of the differences in this game, as the Rams were able to convert in jams more often than the Redskins.

The Redskins faced 13 third down attempts, converting on just four of them, with the Rams coming out successful in seven of their 12 third down situations.

Washington led 28-23 at the end of three quarters, but St. Louis was driving down the field and scored to start the fourth. Not only did the Rams take the lead with a touchdown, but they also converted on a two-point conversion to ensure that a field goal would not beat them if it came down to it.

Robert Griffin III was not the same brilliant player he was in the Redskins' season opener against the New Orleans Saints last week, this time going 20-29 passing for 206 yards, a touchdown and an interception. There was also this:

Josh Wilson Injury: Redskins CB Leaves Game After Big Hit

Redskins cornerback Josh Wilson left the game against the Rams during the fourth quarter when he was hit on Daryl Richardson's 53-yard run. This means the Washington defense is now without left defensive end Adam Carriker, right outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and Wilson, the right cornerback.

To start the game, Wilson recovered a Rams fumble and returned it for a touchdown to give the Redskins an early lead. Wilson had two tackles and that fumble recovery before he left with the injury.

Redskins Vs. Rams Score Update: Washington Trails 31-28 Early In 4th Quarter

The Reskins gave up their narrow lead over the Rams at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and now trail, 31-28. Sam Bradford connected with Matthew Mulligan five seconds into the fourth to put the Rams up. It took just 2:11 of the third quarter for Bradford to find Brandon Gibson for this 34-yard touchdown pass to give the Rams the lead.

Robert Griffin III led the Skins on a touchdown drive and scored on a seven-yard run to regain the lead for the Redskins. But the Rams came answered back. Washington had taken a 21-16 lead at halftime, but are now fighting from behind.

Redskins Vs. Rams Score Update: Washington Leads St. Louis At Halftime, 21-16

The Redskins lead the Rams at halftime, 21-16 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. After the first quarter, the Redskins had taken a 14-3 advantage, but St. Louis managed to score a touchdown and a pair of field goals in the second period.

Greg Zuerlein kicked a 33-yard field goal to cut the Redskins' lead down to just one possession. Then, rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III found Leonard Hankerson down the middle of the field for a 68-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 21-6. It was Griffin's second longest touchdown pass of the young season and Hankerson's first career touchdown reception.

But the Rams were successful in closing the second quarter with a pair of scoring drives -- a seven-play, 75-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford to Danny Amendola, then another field goal by Zuerlein just as the half ended.

Griffin and Bradford are having quite the duel in this one. The rookie is 8-of-11 on his passes for 110 yards in the first half. Bradford is 17-23 for 181 yards and a touchdown pass.

Redskins Vs. Rams: Robert Griffin III Makes Rams Defenders Look Silly On TD Run

The Robert Griffin III Show continues for the Redskins, as the dynamic rookie quarterback has Washington up 21-13 approaching halftime with the host St. Louis Rams. Griffin is eight of 10 passing for 110 yards and a touchdownin the first half, but it was his touchdown run against the Rams that will once again have Redskins fans putting the finishing touches on their RGIII shrines at halftime of Sunday's contest.

Brian Orakpo Injury: Redskins LB Injures Right Shoulder, Return Is Questionable

Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo left the field during Sunday afternoon's game with the St. Louis Rams after what appeared to be an injury to his right shoulder. Orakpo immediately went to the sideline and tossed a helmet in frustration after sacking Rams quarterback Sam Bradford.

Orakpo was seen on the sidelines with his pads off, but then did return to the game, only to exit again. According to the team's official twitter feed, his return on Sunday is now questionable:

Washington currently leads, 21-6, with under four minutes remaining in the first half.

Redskins Vs. Rams: Pierre Garcon Not Expected To Play Sunday, According To Report

The Washington Redskins do not expect to have wide receiver Pierre Garcon available to play this Sunday against the St. Louis Rams, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported.

Garcon hurt his right foot last week during an 88-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the Redskins' 40-32 victory over the New Orleans Saints. For the game, Garcon totaled four catches for 109 yards and touchdown.

The fifth-year wideout has been unable to practice fully all week, sitting out Wednesday's session entirely before getting limited work in the next two days. He had been labeled questionable heading into Sunday's contest at Edward Jones Dome.

Throughout the preseason and up until his injury in Week 1, Garcon had been rookie sensation Robert Griffin III's favorite target. An offseason priority for coach Mike Shanahan, Garcon should give the Redskins the playmaker that it lacked last season.

Redskins Vs. Rams: Pierre Garcon A Game-Time Decision, According To Mike Shanahan

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon will be a game-time decision for Sunday's Week 2 matchup against the St. Louis Rams, according to head coach Mike Shanahan. Garcon has been hampered by a right foot injury, which he sutained during an 88-yard touchdown play against the New Orleans Saints.

On the bright-side, the 26-year-old receiver has been able to practice in the last two days after being forced to completely miss Wednesday's practice. Of course, he could only sparingly work in the two practices he did attend.

Prior to leaving the game against New Orleans, Garcon registered 109 yards on four receptions in his Redskins' debut.

Redskins Vs. Rams Injury Report: Pierre Garcon 'Very Limited' In Thursday's Practice

The status for Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon is still unclear for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. Garcon participated in practice on Thursday, but was still hampered by a right foot injury suffered in Washington's season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Head coach Mike Shanahan spoke to reporters following practice about Garcon's injury:

"I really don’t know," Shanahan said when asked about Garçon’s availability. "He was very limited. We’ll have a better idea tomorrow."

Garcon injured his foot while making one of the big plays that the Redskins expected when they brought him over from the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason, an 88-yard touchdown catch from rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. Garcon left the game, but not before tallying 109 yards on four receptions in his Washington debut.

The fifth-year wide receiver out of Mount Union put together a solid stretch of production in the past three seasons. His best year came in 2011, when he caught 70 passes for 947 yards and six touchdowns.

NFL Odds Week 2: Redskins Vs. Rams

The Washington Redskins are favored entering Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. According to the website OddsShark, the Redskins are 3-point favorites, with the total points predicted for 45 to 45.5 points.

Recent trends between the two teams show that offenses have not been prolific in this matchup. In six of the last eight matchups between these two teams, the total has been under. In addition to that, seven of the last 10 games the Redskins have played have been under, but that could change if quarterback Robert Griffin III is as prolific as he was in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints.

The Redskins play the Rams on Sunday at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Fox.

Redskins Vs. Rams Injury Report: Chris Baker Back At Practice

The Washington Redskins injury report has been released following Wednesday's practice, and only two players did not participate in practice for the Skins. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon was held out due to his foot injury and safety Brandon Meriweather is still out with a sprained knee. Meriweather is certainly out for Sunday, but the Redskins hold on to hope that Garcon will be ready to go for the 1:00 p.m. contest against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Redskins backup nose tackle, Chris Baker, who missed Week 1 with an ankle injury, was a full participant at practice on Wednesday.

The injury report for the Rams is a little bit more cluttered. Rookie DT Michael Brockers is still out with an ankle injury, and DT Matt Conrath, who also missed Week 1, sat out of practice with his knee injury. DT Darell Scott, who also missed Week 1, was able to have a limited role in practice on Wednesday, still slowed by a knee injury. On the offensive line, G Rokevious Watkins missed practice with an ankle injury but OT Rodger Saffold was a limited participant. This is good news for Saffold, who appeared to suffer a major neck injury in the Rams' opener against the Lions, but came away with only a neck sprain.
