JaVale McGee Selected For 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Officially

Well, it's now officially official. The NBA has just announced the field for the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest, and JaVale McGee's name is on it. McGee will join Blake Griffin, Serge Ibaka and Brandon Jennings in the event.

Here's the official release:

There will be a new Sprite Slam Dunk champion crowned on Feb. 19, at STAPLES Center (8 p.m. ET on TNT) in Los Angeles as four first-time contestants vie for the title: the Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin, the Milwaukee Bucks' Brandon Jennings, the Oklahoma City Thunder's Serge Ibaka and the Washington Wizards' JaVale McGee.

McGee also confirmed the news earlier on his Twitter account:

3 big men in the dunk contest...#Priceless... really excited !!!!

Griffin is the overwhelming favorite, but McGee has certainly pulled off his fair share of dunks, so maybe he can slay the dragon.

JaVale McGee Selected To Participate In 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, According To Report

JaVale McGee's 2010/11 season has been punctuated by some pretty spectacular in-game dunks. The NBA has noticed those dunks too, because according to a report, McGee will be selected to participate in the slam dunk contest at NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles in February.

Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times is reporting that McGee will be joined by Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers (duh), Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee BucksCSN's Chris Miller has confirmed McGee's inclusion.

Javale McGee will take part in the slam dunk contest all star weekend in LA in February. Can a 7 footer win it?

The participants for all of the Saturday night All-Star events will be announced on TNT on Thursday. This is the first time a member of the Wizards will be participating in any of the pre-game festivities since Gilbert Arenas was in the three-point shootout in 2007.

Griffin is a given, of course, and Ibaka has some ups as a big man, but the inclusion of Jennings is surprising, considering Jennings is hurt and doesn't have much of an in-game dunking portfolio
