A rumor emerged yesterday that the Wizards are aggressively pursuing the No. 2 overall pick currently held by the Minnesota Timberwolves, and would use that pick on Derrick Williams. Which immediately makes you think about what kind of pieces the Wizards would need to ship out for the Timberwolves to accept such a deal.
Well, the Timberwolves seem to prefer a "young veteran" so nobody still within their first couple of years probably. Which, in terms of assets with positive value, basically leaves JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche. Of those two players, McGee obviously has the best value around the league, and would probably be preferred by Minnesota to Blatche because the Timberwolves have a big hole in the middle. In fact, McGee has the potential to be the shot blocking presence that would fit very will with Kevin Love. So the conversation probably starts with him.
The Wizards also have the sixth and 18th overall picks in this Draft, and could use one or both of those picks depending on how they feel about Williams. In a weak draft, I think that McGee and the No. 6 pick is a pretty steep price. But McGee and No. 18 would be pretty solid value, and give the Wizards an opportunity to replace some of his production at No. 6. In fact, Minnesota is $4 million under the salary cap, so they don't even need to send anything back in return. That right there, McGee/18 for No. 2, would be pretty solid for both sides I think.
