Today is a big day for the Maryland Terrapins, in more ways than one. For one thing, this weekend is Homecoming weekend, which means the stadium is going to be absolutely packed with crazy Maryland fans. For another, though, a win over Wake Forest would be a big, big deal for this team.
Why? The Terps currently have five wins. To be eligible for a bowl game, you must win six games. Therefore, if Maryland defeats Wake Forest this afternoon, they will be bowl-eligible. No matter the level of competition, no matter the way the team has looked, that's a big accomplishment considering the Terps went just 2-10 last year. It may not be enough to save coach Ralph Friedgen, but it's still a big deal.
A win over Wake Forest shouldn't be too tough either. The Demon Deacons are struggling this year, having lost five games in a row. Last week, they were shellacked by Virginia Tech. In one of their wins, they gave up 48 points to Duke. Maryland has to be able to win this game. Otherwise, they probably don't deserve to go to a bowl game.
