The Senior Players Championship is one of the biggest tournaments on the Champions Tour calendar, and this year it is being held at Avenel Farm in Potomac. Play started today, and will continue into the weekend. You can find tee times for the event here.
The field features a number of really good players and famous personalities. The name that immediately jumps off the page is Corey Pavin, if for nothing else than his coaching the unsuccessful Ryder Cup team less than a week ago.
Other notables:
- Fred Funk, who graduated from University of Maryland and worked as a golf coach there for six years while trying to break onto the PGA Tour.
- If you were watching the Ryder Cup, then you saw the replay of the putt Bernhard Langer missed that cost the Europeans the '81 Trophy. Now, he spends his time owning the Champions Tour, and is one of the favorites this week.
- Tom Watson has contended in a couple majors over the last year or so. Gotta think that success will translate to a tournament at this level.
- Freddy "Boom Boom" Couples. Enough said on that one.
