The Georgetown Hoyas, like most power conference teams, usually open their season in one of two ways. Either they participate in a preseason exempt tournament, or they open with a gimmie game against a terrible team. This season's opener, however, is neither.
Instead, the Hoyas will do what few power conference teams will do: go on the road against a big-time mid-major power. Tonight, Georgetown will open their season at Old Dominion, a Colonial Athletic Association power that actually made it further in last year's NCAA Tournament than the Hoyas did. While Georgetown was being shocked by 14-seed Ohio, Old Dominion was beating Notre Dame in the first round. Their run ended in a tight loss to eventual Elite 8 participant Baylor, but this year, the Monarchs return all five starters and are stronger than ever. Without Greg Monroe, it's even conceivable that Georgetown is an underdog tonight.
The good news for Georgetown is that, win or lose, this game will provide good preparation this season as they head into conference play. The game will be on CSN+ tonight at 7 p.m.
