After suffering two losses to two ranked teams in two days at Madison Square Garden, the Maryland Terrapins hope that the Delaware State Hornets won't provide much competition Tuesday.
Maryland lost to No. 5 Pittsburgh 79-70 Thursday and No. 19 Illinois 80-76 Friday in the semifinal and consolation games of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches v. Cancer. Though the Terps left New York City with two losses, they performed admirably against two nationally-ranked opponents in an early test for a young team.
Jordan Williams scored 29 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in the two games, but struggled at the free throw line, shooting 8-for-15. The Terps as a whole improved their free throw shooting Saturday, shooting 13-for-18 after a 14-for-30 effort against Pittsburgh.
Delaware State, a member of the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), has played one game this season, a 63-56 win over Washington Adventist. Junior guard Jay Threatt led the NCAA in steals per game with 2.8 last season. The Hornets finished 17-12 in 2009-10.
