Jose Theodore was awarded the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Theodore acknowledged his son, Chace, who passed away last summer as a result of respiratory complications brought on by a premature birth, as well as his teammates, the Capitals organization, and other members of his family.
Theodore, who went 30-7-7 with a 2.81 goals against average and .911 save percentage on the season, is not signed for next year. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
