One Night After Costly Error, Ian Desmond Goes To The Bench

There have been lots of down moments in a very down stretch for the Nationals recently, but few compare to the baffling error shortstop Ian Desmond made in the bottom of the seventh inning last night. Desmond booted a double-play ball, his 19th of the season, which eventually led to five Braves runs and a costly loss for Stephen Strasburg.

So if you're a fan of instant accountability, then you'll be a fan of this: Desmond will not start tonight's game. Instead, Alberto Gonzalez will get the call, which is a real slap in the face when you consider this, via Ben Goessling.

We've seen over the last couple seasons that Gonzalez probably is nothing more than a utility player, but hey, it's worth a shot.

It's a pretty big tumble for a youngster who got off to such a promising start in his rookie season. I guess this is the rookie wall.
