Past Perspectives: 2010 Is The New 1996

New, 1 comment

The 2010 sports year has already brought in more than its fair share of excitement and disappointment to the District, but it's not as unique a year in D.C. sports history as you might think.

Though it may be only July, the year of 2010 has already been filled with enough highs and lows to fill a decade. From the Albert Haynesworth drama and the disappointment that surrounded the Wizards and the Capitals' early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, to the excitement that surrounded the Wizards winning the NBA Draft lottery and Stephen Strasburg's debut, it's certainly been an interesting calendar year in Washington.

That said, the crazy ups and downs of the 2010 season are not inherently unique to Washington sports history. Like everything else, sports events happen in cycles. As you turn back, the calendar, you'll see that it doesn't take long to find a year that bears some striking resemblances to the year we're going through at the moment.
