Half Smokes Hypothetical: How Optimistic Is Too Optimistic?

Half Smokes Hypothetical is a daily discussion where we throw out a D.C. sports-related question based on the news of the day. It's a hypothetical discussion, which is what makes it fun (we hope).

I was thinking about this question as it related to the Redskins when I read a transcript of yet another optimistic radio interview, this time from Chris Cooley. It's become common to be skeptical of all the lip service the players give in the days leading up to the season. They haven't proven anything, so why should they be talking about how great everything is going to be this season?

↵

At the same time, though, what else would you have the players do? Matt Terl makes a really good point -- it would be pretty bad for the team's psyche if the players weren't optimistic like this. Coming into a season on a down note can't be good either.

So I'll open this one up.

How optimistic should the players be when they talk to the media prior to the season? Should they be as optimistic as they have been over the past few years?
