God Shammgod Continues To Toil As God Shammgod

God Shammgod's tenure as a D.C. athlete lasted only 20 games, and those were nondescript games at that. But because his name is God Shammgod, and because this city has a fun fascination with nondescript former Bullets/Wizards, he has a cult following around town.

For those of you who are a part of said cult following, you'll enjoy this Yahoo! Sports article on him. In a nutshell, Shammgod, now 34, is playing in China and has done so for a while. But there is one interesting piece of information in here.

Selected as the co-city Player of the Year with Marbury and a McDonald's All-American as a senior in 1995, Shammgod headed to Providence to play for Pete Gillen.

But once he got there, he encountered a problem: Shammgod was required to go by his legal name of God Shammgod unless he legally changed it to Shammgod Wells. That required $600 he didn't have, so Shammgod stuck with his birth name and a legend was born.

Wait a minute - Shammgod only kept his first name because he had to? He didn't want to be known as "God Shammgod?" This kind of puts a bit of a damper on the God Shammgod legacy, doesn't it?
