Half Smokes Heroes: Tyler Clippard

Each weekend Half Smokes Heroes will pay some respect to a group or individual flying under the radar who has gone above and beyond the call of duty during the week.

Matt Capps will get plenty of accolades in the coming days for his selection to this year's All-Star Game. As Adam Kilgore noted today, Capps had to overcome the death of his father last October, not to mention the transition to a new team in order to make his first All-Star Game.

But as we give Matt Capps his due credit, let's not forget about Tyler Clippard's role in getting Capps to the All-Star Game. There's no way Matt Capps would be second in the majors in saves if Tyler Clippard wasn't having such a great year as a set-up man. And let's face it, if Matt Capps wasn't among the league leaders in saves, he would not be going to the All-Star Game this season.

Even though only one half of the Clipp & Save combo is headed to the All-Star Game, the half that's staying home is a big part of why the other is on this year's National League squad. For his part in getting Matt Capps to the All-Star Game, Tyler Clippard is this week's Half Smokes Hero.
