Maryland QB Danny O'Brien Is One Smart Cookie

Jamar Robinson will be the Terps starting quarterback when Maryland lines up against West Virginia on Saturday, but everything we've heard suggests that Danny O'Brien is quickly gaining ground and might supplant Robinson at some point this season.

Robinson has superior physical tools for the position, he's faster and has a stronger arm. But O'Brien is winning over the Terps staff with his intangibles. Jeff Barker calls him a "Gym Rat," and Eric Prisbell of the Washington Post has the scoop on how O'Brien impressed coaches with his intelligence before he ever put on a jersey.

Willert (O'Brien's High School coach) recalled that the coaches who looked O'Brien in the eye, sat and engaged him, heard him explain offenses and dissect defenses, offered him a scholarship within 24 hours. One was Franklin. The two - kindred spirits, studious football junkies who thrive on competition - connected immediately.
