Half Smokes Heroes: Vonnie Holliday

↵

Each weekend Half Smokes Heroes will pay some respect to a group or individual flying under the radar who has gone above and beyond the call of duty during the week.

On Thursday, I took some time to appreciate some of the veterans who have helped keep Washington teams together over the years, so it only makes sense to pay attention to another vet who could make an impact this season.

Over his 12 year NFL career, Holliday has always provided steady production, whether it be in Green Bay, Kansas City, Miami or Denver. Now in Washington, he becomes a valuable player for defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, because Holliday has experience playing in a 3-4 defense that most of the team doesn't. Even if he doesn't record a sack this season, which I'm sure he will, he gives the Redskins a coach on the field who can make sure players are lining up in the right position on the field and explain things to his teammates in layman's terms.

For bringing a much needed veteran presence during a transition period with the Redskins' defense, Vonnie Holliday is this week's Half Smokes Hero.
