I'm guessing many of you have stopped paying attention to the Nationals now that it's September and their season is nearing its slow conclusion. This is completely understandable, considering the Redskins are starting up again and the Capitals and Wizards aren't far behind. But if you are one of those people, you're leaving just as one Nationals youngster is generating a ton of buzz for his play.
↵That youngster isn't Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper, it's Danny Espinosa, a middle infield prospect that's had quite a debut. Yesterday, Espinosa slammed two home runs, including a grand slam, in leading the Nationals to a big win over the Mets. Since being called up last Wednesday, Espinosa is 9-16, with three home runs and three doubles.
↵The Nationals will tell you that they knew he could hit all along. They're probably right. Color commentator Ray Knight did tell you on the broadcast yesterday that he's never seen a more impressive debut for a September call-up. I'm not sure if he's actually right, but the spirit of the comment certainly is. Espinosa himself will tell you he already is well equipped to hit to all fields. He's definitely right.
↵Regardless, with Ian Desmond playing well and Espinosa turning heads, the middle of the Nationals' infield might be set for quite a while. Who said you can't get a little ahead of yourself in September?
