On The Nature Of The D.C. Sports Fan

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post explores the nature of the D.C. sports fan in this long Washington Post cover story. It’s extensive and it leaves without much of a firm answer, but that’s kind of the point. There’s no real way to pin down a “D.C. sports fan” except to say there’s a wide range of viewpoints. That’s reflected in Steinberg’s piece.

Here’s the most stunning line of the story to me.

Of area basketball fans, 29 percent choose the Wizards as their favorite team, with a stunning 14 percent identifying the Los Angeles Lakers and 9 percent the Boston Celtics.

In other words, there are nearly as many Lakers and Celtics fans as there are Wizards fans, according to this poll. Just as we all suspected.
