The Navy Midshipman took the ball first and mounted an 11-play 58-yard drive on the ground to milk a little over five minutes off the clock. SMU couldn't slow the triple option with the Mids picking up chunk after chunk of yards on the ground. The drive stalled out right before Navy got into the redzone, settling for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Kriss Proctor lead the way on the drive with 25 rushing yards.
The teams traded punts the remainder of the first quarter, as SMU couldn't get anything going on offense against the Navy defense. Navy got the football back at midfield right before the end of the first quarter and began another drive rushing the football.
