The Washington Capitals took off before the Winnipeg Jets, but the home team grounded them shortly after.
Alexander Semin put the Caps up first, but Evander Kane tied the game shortly after as Washington and Winnipeg are tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Semin's goal at 3:53 put the Caps up 1-0. Brooks Laich entered the zone along the left boards and sent a pass to Jason Chimera, who was running parallel to his right. Chimera then sent a quick pass to a cutting Alexander Semin, who had enough space to freeze Ondrej Pavelec on a shot fake. With Pavelec out of position, Semin had a wide-open net and roofed the puck into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Kane tied the game for Winnipeg at 7:51 off of a turnover. The Jets had the Caps pinned down in their defensive zone for almost one minute before Kane beat Marcus Johansson, Cody Eakin and John Carlson to a loose puck and Michal Neuvirth with a wrist shot for his seventh goal of the season and sixth against the Caps in his young career, most against any opponent.
