Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs was the Washington Capitals' fourth straight loss and eighth in their last 11 games. When the going gets tough, so do the coaches. Perhaps Bruce Boudreau's seat is getting warmer? General manager George McPhee didn't have an answer.
When asked after the Caps' playoff elimination in May if Boudreau's job was safe, McPhee had this to say:
"I expect him to be back, yeah. He's a good coach. Somebody said he's not a playoff coach. There's no difference between a playoff coach and a regular season coach. You're either a good coach or you're not and he's a good coach."
McPhee's comments tonight - or lack thereof - could be very telling.
