Lamont Peterson defeated Amir Khan in a majority decision in a thrilling boxing fight at the Washington Convention Center in D.C., taking away Khan's IBF and WBA light welterweight crowns. The fight was controversial, though, because Khan was called for two point penalties for pushing Peterson. This led many to believe that Peterson, a D.C. native, was given a bit of a hometown advantage in the victory, since the points proved to be decisive.
In his post-fight interview with HBO, Khan was enraged. The former champion said he felt like he was fighting against two people -- Peterson, and the referees. He also took a shot at the city, saying "there has never been boxing here in the last 20 years because this is what happens." Khan added that he tried to fight fair, but Peterson ducked his head so low, which made life difficult for him and may have made it appear like he was pushing back.
Peterson, for his part, was classy in victory, saying he would absolutely fight Khan again in a different location.
Does Khan have a point? Normally, a referee will give warnings for pushing before doling out penalties, so he very well might. In any event, Peterson is the new champion, and Khan will have to figure out his next step.
