Virginia Tech has aspirations of making the NCAA Tournament. Instead, their season ended in the second round of the NIT. Joe Ragland hit a jump shot with two seconds left in overtime, and Wichita State held on for a 79-76 overtime win over the Hokies to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIT bracket.
The Hokies had tied the game at 76 on a layup by Terrell Bell with 10 seconds left, but Ragland ran the clock down and nailed the jumper to give Wichita State the win. He also atoned for a missed layup that could have ended the game at the end of regulation. The Shockers move on to face College of Charleston in the quarterfinals, while Virginia Tech's disappointing season ends at 22-12.
Malcolm Delaney scored 30 points for the Hokies in his final college game, but didn't get enough help. Erick Green chipped in with 17 points, but Jeff Allen, the Hokies' other star, had just 10 points and fouled out with six minutes to go in regulation. This is the same thing Allen did in the Hokies' ACC Tournament semifinal loss to Duke.
