If you thought Richmond looked a little overwhelmed in its 77-57 Sweet 16 loss to top-seeded Kansas, you weren't alone. The question, of course, is what caused Richmond to be so overwhelmed. Besides the obvious talent discrepancy, it might have had something to do with what happened before the game.
↵This is a picture of the two teams engaging in a bit of a staredown in the tunnel leading out to the court. Apparently, while Richmond was in some sort of huddle, the Kansas players brushed shoulders as they ran past to get onto the court. The Spiders players took exception to that and started to respond. There was a little pushing and shoving before security personnel got things under control.
↵The tempers flared during the game a couple times too, with Kevin Smith getting into the face of player, followed by Tyshawn Taylor picking up a technical on the ensuing possession. It's unclear why Richmond and Kansas seem to hate each other so much, but either way, at least the Jayhawks backed it up with their play on the court.
