VCU's Shaka Smart's Base Salary Less Than John Calipari's NCAA Title Bonus

We're one day away from VCU playing in the 2011 Final Four, so it's time to remind everyone that VCU is the underdog mid-Major Cinderella competing on a national stage with power-conference historical powers like Kentucky and UConn. To that end, we have to pass along this item from Bloomberg.

↵↵John Calipari, coach of the University of Kentucky basketball team, will earn a bonus larger than the annual base salary of Virginia Commonwealth University coach Shaka Smart with the Wildcats' eighth national title.

Smart's base salary is $350,000, while Calipari, who has a base salary of $5.76 million, would receive a $375,000 bonus if his Wildcats defeat Connecticut, then either VCU or Butler in the title game. That figure even dwarfs the bonus Jim Calhoun and Smart would get for accomplishing the same thing.

Truth be told, this probably says more about Calipari than Smart. But regardless, anytime we can drive home the point that VCU is a mid-major, we're going to do it.
