Organizers Considering Moving Preakness Stakes To Sunday In Future

As it stands, the Preakness Stakes is one of the biggest and best single day parties in the Mid Atlantic. But if the organizers of the event have their way, they could make it into a full weekend affair. According to the Baltimore Sun, the organizers of the Preakness Stakes are discussing potentially moving the race back to Sunday, to create a full weekend celebration.

The idea was raised by an official with MI Developments, the owner of Pimlico, in an interview Monday with Thoroughbred Times. Mike Rogers said pushing the Florida Derby from Saturday to Sunday this year as part of a weekend package of racing at Gulfstream Park lowered the take for the premier event but raised the two-day handle by 29 percent.

I'm not a horse racing aficionado by any means, but it would be bizarre for one of the triple crown races to be on Sunday, especially if the other two races were still on Saturday. But if it means more money for Pimlico, and a bigger party for the fans, I'm all for it.
