2011 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament: Maryland Beats Duke, Advances To National Championship Game

Maryland is headed to the title game of the 2011 NCAA lacrosse tournament after defeating Duke 9-4 in the final four on Saturday night.

The Terps will face Virginia, who beat Denver earlier Saturday, in an all-ACC final. The Championship Game is at 3:30 p.m. on Monday on ESPN.

It's the Terps' 10th trip to the final game, but Maryland is seeking its first national championship since 1975. It's a painful (and, in many way, puzzling) drought for such a proud program and traditional men's lacrosse power.

Senior attackman Grant Catalino led the Terps with three goals, while junior Joe Cummings added two goals and an assist. Goalie Nick Amato made 12 saves on 16 attempts as a strong last line of defense.

"It was unbelievable," Catalino said after the game on ESPN2. "There's chills going down my back. It's unbelievable.

"I think we fed off (the crowd) as soon as we ran in here," he added. "People are behind us in this state."

The Terps beat Virginia 12-7 on April 2 in the teams' only previous meeting this season. Attackman Ryan Young had six points in that game.
