2011 NCAA Lacrosse Championship Game Attendance Was Down, But Why?

The 2011 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship game pitted two traditional lacrosse rivals against each other. It was a battle between Maryland and Virginia, two teams with local ties to the Baltimore location. And yet, the game still didn't draw all that well, at least compared to previous title games.

The announced attendance was 35,661, which seems OK, but is the lowest attendance for an NCAA title game since 2002. Sean Keeley of SBNation.com has all sorts of explanations, ranging from the lack of New York teams (East Coast Bias!) to the sweltering heat. There's also the possibility that Baltimore isn't a very good location for the game, as well as the fact that Memorial Day Monday is not an ideal time for the championship.

Of all of them, I like the last one the most. And now, apropos of nothing, here's Dom Starsia and the rest of the Virginia Cavaliers celebrating their title.
