Now that Animal Kingdom has won the 2011 Kentucky Derby, it's time to turn our attention to the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. Can Animal Kingdom win a second race and threaten to become the first horse in 33 years to win the Triple Crown.
The 136th annual Preakness Stakes will take place on May 21 at Pimlico in Baltimore. The start time for the one and three-quarter mile race is tentatively scheduled for 6:25 p.m. Animal Kingdom and all of the other horses from the Kentucky Derby will get two weeks to rest for the race, though it's unlikely all 19 will end up racing.
Animal Kingdom is looking to become the first horse since Big Brown in 2008 to win the Preakness after winning the Kentucky Derby. The last horse to win the Triple Crown -- i.e. place first at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes -- is Affirmed in 1978.
