When Gary Williams retired unexpectedly last May, University President Wallace Loh announced that he would try to get the court names after the former coach. At the time, it seemed like a no-brainer, but the idea had run into some opposition from people in the athletic department for a few reasons. Some believed that the naming rites should be sold to generate income, while others felt it was unfair to honor Williams with Lefty Driesell still left out in the cold.
Well, according to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun, Maryland has overcome those hurdles, and plans to name the court after Williams after all.
Barker also mentions that the University intends to honor Driesell in some way, which means they were able to satisfy some of those people who were against the court being named after Williams. I still think it is a no-brainer. Williams did a lot for this University, and he deserves to be honored like this.
