Last year, the Virginia Tech Hokies' recruiting class were ranked 32nd in the nation according to Rivals while their in-state rival Virginia Cavaliers scored the 25th-best class overall. The Hokies signed just five of the state’s top 25 players in a down year.
The Hokies are looking to nip that trend in the bud and return to their past glory atop the recruiting rankings in 2012. It starts here in Virginia.
This year, though, the Hokies are poised to reel in more of the state’s top 25 players than they have since 2008, and could set a record if things fall right when National Signing Day arrives Wednesday. Virginia Tech has received oral commitments to its 2012 recruiting class from 10 of the top 25 players from Virginia, and four more are debating whether to pick the Hokies this week.
A lot of credit seems to be going to Shane Beamer, Frank's son, who returned to the staff last year. The 34-year-old was the primary recruiter for seven of Virginia Tech's 27 commitments in 2012, including four-star Chesterfield linebacker Deon Clarke and three-star Richmond defensive tackle Nigel Williams.
