Augustus Maiyo, running in his first career marathon, won the men's title at the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday.

Maiyo, a specialist with the U.S. Army and a former track/cross-country athlete for the Alabama Crimson Tide, finished with a time of 2:20:20 on the 26.2 mile course which went around Washington D.C. and Arlington, VA. The race finished near the Marine Corps War Memorial. Maiyo had run shorter races in his career, but Sunday was his first marathon. He said winning the race was a one-in-a-million feeling.

He ran as part of the Army's World Class Athlete Program and his teammate, Kenneth Foster, finished second with a time of 2:22:39. Birhanu Tadesse, from Ethiopia, finished third on the men's side with a time of 2:23:03.

On the women's side, Hirut Guangul won with a time of 2:42:03. She ran as part of Team I Run 4 God which had three runners finish in the top six finishers. The group ran on behalf of an Army sergeant who is in treatment for post traumatic stress disorder and a brain injury.

Wayinshet Hailu finished second on the women's side with a time of 2:47:04 while Erin Richard finished third just over a minute behind at 2:48:11. More than 30,000 runners participated in the race.
