VCU Basketball Roster: Recruit Jordan Burgess to sit out season

VCU will be without four-star recruit Jordan Burgess for academic reasons in 2012-13.

Steve Dykes-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

VCU freshman Jordan Burgess will not be eligible to play in the 2012-13 season, as he was ruled a partial qualifier by the NCAA, Gary Parrish of CBS reported on Friday. Burgess will receive athletic financial aid and be able to practice with the team.

Burgess was one of two four-star recruits brought in by Shaka Smart in 2012, the other being shooting guard Melvin Johnson. Burgess was rated the 96th overall recruit by ESPN and 101st overall by Rivals.

Freshman Mo Alexie-Cox was also determined to be ineligible by the NCAA for the upcoming year. He will not be able to practice, but will receive aid and attend school. Both will be eligible to play in 2013-14.

The Rams moved will face a tougher schedule this year, as they have moved from the Colonial Athletic Association to the Atlantic 10. Head coach Shaka Smart will need to continue bringing in strong recruiting classes for VCU to stay competitive in their new league.
