The Miami Hurricanes turned a blocked punt into the game's first points, as they lead the Virginia Tech Hokies, 14-3, after the first quarter at Sun Life Stadium on Thursday night.
Miami's Gabriel Terry blocked the punt, and the Hurricanes began their drive on Virginia Tech's 16-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Stephen Morris hit wide receiver Allen Hurns for 16-yard touchdown pass, giving Miami the early advantage about midway through the quarter.
The Hokies responded on their following drive, going 44 yards in 11 plays before getting stymied inside Miami's 10-yard line, eventually setting up a 22-yard field goal by kicker Cody Journell.
By virtue of an 81-yard return on the ensuing kickoff by freshman Duke Johnson, the Hurricanes set up shop on the Hokies' 19-yard line and again took advantage of the short field. On the second play of the drive, Morris connected with running back Mike James for his second 16-yard touchdown strike of the period, bumping Miami's lead to 14-3 at the end of the quarter.
