The George Mason Patriots fell to the New Mexico Lobos, 70-69, on Sunday in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam tournament. With the loss, George Mason will play for third or fifth place in the tournament against either Connecticut or Quinnipiac on Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET..
The Patriots and Lobos played a close game from the tip to the finish. George Mason had two opportunities to put the game out of reach in the second half, but could not pull away from New Mexico. The Patriots led 67-62 with just 38 seconds remaining and got a steal which forced the Lobos to foul. Byron Allen missed the free-throw attempt and New Mexico scored right away on a dunk. After Sherrod Wright made a pair of free throws to extend the Patriots' lead to 69-64 with 17 seconds left, New Mexico hit a three-pointer, got a steal and beat the buzzer with the game-winning three.
Sherrod Wright led George Mason with 22 points. Tony Snell led New Mexico with 27 points, including the game-winning three point basket.
