Old Dominion will host Georgia Southern on Saturday in the FCS playoff quarterfinal round after defeating Coastal Carolina 63-35 last weekend. Georgia Southern earned the right to play the Monarchs by defeating Central Arkansas 24-16 on Saturday. These same two teams met in the playoffs last season, with the Eagles winning a shootout, 55-48.
Old Dominion is 11-1 on the season, with their only loss coming against Villanova in October. Georgia Southern is 9-3 this year, with losses to The Citadel, Appalachian St. and Georgia.
ODU is led by sophomore Taylor Heinicke, who has been named one of the three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, given to the best player in FCS. Heinicke is on pace to break Steve McNair's FCS single-season passing record of 4,863 yards, and needs just 208 yards on Saturday to do so.
Georgia Southern relies more heavily on the ground game, throwing the ball only 76 times in total this season. Heinicke, on the other hand, threw the ball 79 times in a game against New Hampshire earlier this year, compiling an NCAA record 730 yards in that game.
