Florida Panthers forward Kris Versteeg has been fined $2,500 by the NHL for cross-checking Washington Capitals forward Jeff Halpern in the waning moments of the Caps' 2-1 win Friday.
With about seven seconds left in the third period, Halpern lined up against Marcel Goc to take a faceoff. Halpern fell to the ice in attempt to cover the puck and run out the clock, but while he was down, Versteeg cross-checked Halpern in the back of the head, which can be seen below:
No penalty was assessed on the play and Halpern was not injured; he played Saturday in the Caps' 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Versteeg has a prior history; he was suspended one game in December 2008 for his role in a fight with former Phoenix Coyotes forward Kyle Turris, now of the Ottawa Senators.
All player fines go towards the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
