The Washington Capitals may be down, but they are not out as the New York Islanders hold a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.
New York started the period with momentum as Washington did its best to hold on and it did, largely because of Michal Neuvirth's stellar goaltending; he stopped all 12 shots he faced.
The Caps made a late push with some spirited shifts (they registered their first shot of the period about nine minutes in), but they could not beat Evgeni Nabokov. In fact, most of the Caps' best chances did not result in shots as they whiffed at several quality chances in tight.
The Caps hold a 20-15 shot advantage.
