Hampton's attempt to be the second No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the history of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament fell short as the Pirates fell 73-51 to Stanford in Fresno Region action Saturday in Norfolk, Va.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike led the way for Stanford, scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Hampton got within 22-21 after a Choicetta McMillian three-pointer with seven minutes to go before halftime. But the Cardinal went on a 20-6 run to close the first half and took a 42-27 lead into the locker room. Stanford was on cruise control for most of the second half as they held Hampton to 31 percent shooting from the field (20-for-63). By contrast, Stanford shot 58 percent from the floor (29-for-50).
Stanford advances to the second round, where they will play No. 8 seed West Virginia on Monday. The Mountaineers defeated No. 9 seed Texas 68-55 earlier Monday.
