The No. 16 seed Liberty Lady Flames (24-9) were no match for top-seeded Notre Dame on Sunday, losing their opening game in the 2012 Women's NCAA Tournament 74-43 to the Fighting Irish (31-3).
Notre Dame jumped out to an 11-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, and after Liberty fought back to make the score 16-8, the Irish went on another 11-0 run on their way to an insurmountable 44-19 lead at the half.
Notre Dame shot 48.5 percent in the game, while holding Liberty to just 31 percent shooting from the floor. The Lady Flames, who averaged 20 turnovers a game during the regular season, unfortunately topped that on Sunday with 23 giveaways, 17 of which came in the lopsided first half.
The Irish will now take on the California Golden Bears on Tuesday at the Purcell Pavilion, where Notre Dame is 16-1 this season.
