H.D. Woodson High School outscored Good Counsel 18-6 in the fourth quarter to win the Abe Pollin Girls' City Title Game 64-54 Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.
The win gave the Woodson girls program its third City Title in five years and its fifth since the girls' game was inaugurated in 1990.
Breonn Hughey led the Warriors with 19 points, while Rahni Bell added 12. Chanel Green and Jephany Brown each recorded 11 points. Faith Randolph led Good Counsel with 16 points, while Sara Woods scored 15.
The first quarter gave no hint of how tight the game would become, as Woodson came out faster and apparently better-adjusted to the relatively cavernous Verizon Center. After conceding the first basket, the Lady Warriors scored 19 of the quarter's final 24 points and led 19-7 after eight minutes.
In the second quarter, Sara Woods brought Good Counsel back into the game almost single-handedly, scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds as the Falcons whittled their deficit down to 27-25 at the intermission.
Woods gave the Falcons their first lead of the game when she converted a three-point play in the third quarter to make the score 34-31. But Good Counsel couldn't shake Woodson in a high-scoring third quarter that saw 42 points scored and developed into a shootout between Hughey and Woods.
