The Washington Capitals are trying to finish up their regular season on a two-game winning streak and are well on their way through the first period of play against the New York Rangers. The Caps broke the 0-0 tie first with an Alex Ovechkin goal, assisted by Brooks Laich to give the Caps the early lead.
The Caps weren't done though in the first period, as Mathieu Perreault picked up a goal to give Washington a 2-0 lead over the Rangers. Towards the end of the first period, Ryan McDonagh picked up a delay of game penalty, giving the Caps a powerplay opportunity and they took advantage. John Carlson picked up a powerplay goal, giving the Caps a 3-0 lead as they head into the locker room to get ready for the second period.
