French Open Results: No. 1 Seeds Novak Djokovic, Victoria Azarenka Win On Friday

Friday play at the famous clay courts of Roland Garros saw the top seeds in both the men's and women's draw advance at the 2012 French Open, with both Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka emerging from their matches victorious.

Djokovic extended his 24-match Grand Slam winning streak to 24 games with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 takedown of France's Nicolas Devilder. Azarenka defeated Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4, 6-4 in a meeting of former junior rivals.

Other Friday action on the men's side of the draw saw 2009 French Open champion Roger Federer need four sets to defeat Nicolas Mahut of France, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. With the victory, Federer improved his record number of Grand Slam match wins to 235. The lone upset of the day in the men's bracket came when No. 22 Andreas Seppi beat No. 14 Fernando Verdasco in five sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The women's side of the tournament saw No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova easily dispatch Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-1, 6-1 on Friday. No. 13 seed Ana Ivanovic fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Italian Sara Errani. Ivanovic committed 40 unforced errors to just 18 for Errani. 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens continued her winning ways, dispatching Mathilde Johansson of France 6-3, 6-2 on Friday.
