French Open 2012 Results: American Varvara Lepchenko Upsets Francesca Schiavone

Saturday at Roland Garros saw yet another unlikely American advance to the fourth round of the 2012 French Open on the women's side of the draw. Unseeded Varvara Lepchenko, the 63rd-ranked player in the world, defeated 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 8-6 on Saturday. This is the first time Lepchenko has made it past the second round of any Grand Slam tournament.

Lepchenko joins 19-year-old Floridian Sloane Stephens in advancing to the fourth round, the first time two unseeded American women have made that round of a major tournament since 2002's Wimbledon.

In other women's action, defending champion Li Na rallied to defeat American Christina McHale 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 and No. 4 seed Petra Kvitova advanced by beating Nina Bratchikova of Russia 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
