The first round of the AT&T National is complete, and so far Congressional Country Club in Bethesda has proven to be a much tougher test then it was for last year's U.S. Open.
Bo Van Pelt is the solo overall leader after he shot a 4-under par 67 on Thursday. By contrast, eventual champion Rory McIlroy carded a 65 after his first 18 holes at Congressional in 2011. Three-time major winner Vijay Singh is one of three golfers a stroke behind at 3-under. (Jimmy Walker and Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge are the others.)
The local favorite is Billy Hurley III, who shot a 2-under 69. Hurley, who was born in Leesburg, Va., is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and still lives in Annapolis.
Tournament host Tiger Woods shot a 1-over par 72 to put him five shots behind Van Pelt. Woods birdied the 9th and 14th holes, but bogeyed the 4th, 11th, and the 15th to finish the day outside the red numbers.
